The forging mills of Engelsberg constitute the most complete example and best preserved Swedish Fonderies whose production of iron of high-quality ensured the Sweden the first place in this sector.

This industry was initiated by Walloon workmen under the impulse of Louis de Geer. The community wallophone in the area remained alive until the 19th century.

The forging mills of Engelsberg were registered on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO in 1993.
