Forge (metallurgy)
The term forging mill indicates the workshop of the Forgeron and the hearth of heating of the métal.
The Forgeage is the term recovering the deformation of metal, hot or cold, by the use of a tool of shock (hammer, Martinet, Marteau-pilon) and of a support (anvil, matrix).
An artisanal forging mill comprises a hearth to bring metal (generally iron or steel) up to a temperature where metal becomes malleable (when it is red) or at a temperature or the work hardening cease to increase. The hearth of the forging mill is equipped with a system of blower or a bellows actuated manually in the forging mills primitives.
It also comprises one or more anvils and a water bucket to cool hot iron quickly and thus to harden the part forgée.
The tools at the disposal of the blacksmith are grips, hammers and masses to work metal.
The final form once obtained, the part is generally subjected to thermal Traitements making it possible to control the hardening or the softening of the part according to its use.
