The national forest of Saint-Sever is a Forêt south-west of the Calvados, in the Bocage virois.
Geography
On a surface of 1555 ha, the national forest extends on all the south from the territory from the commune of
Saint-Sever-Apple-brandy, on the southernmost heights of the Bocage virois, country of the Armorican Massif. The basement is composed in north of Schiste S briovériens, the south being located on the granitic solid mass of Transfers-Carolles. It culminates with 340 meters with the Hillock of Mesnil. The
His and the Brévogne (affluent of the Transfers) there take their source.
History
Located on the Roman way of
Avranches at
Old and property of the lord of Saint-Sever and king of Bessin at the 5th century, of the Viscounts of Avranches which had built there the
Vieux Castle (Motte castrale) at the 11th century, the forest was confiscated and allotted to the family Of Glazed at the beginning of the 13th century by Philippe Auguste. By repurchasing it one century later, Philippe Beautiful the inserts it in the royal field. It thus becomes Bien national with the
revolution.
At the time of the Second world war, the forest was used for the German armed which established to with it an important ammunition dump (the Lager Michel ) with the neighborhoods of the vault of the Hermitage.
Cultivated gasolines
National forest, the forest of Saint-Sever is managed by ONF. Before the storm of December 26th, 1999, half of the pieces was planted coniferous tree. Replantings envisage a return to a majority of leafy trees represented by the Chêne reopens, the beech, and with a least degree the Châtaigner. The coniferous trees will be primarily pectinate fir trees and fir trees Douglas.
Fauna and flora
The forest lodges Chevreuil S, Sanglier S, Renard S and Blaireau X. The lake of the
Gast, in southern limit of the forest, is a populated ornithological reserve, inter alia, migrants or sedentaries, of Colvert S, hens of water, will hérons ashy, reed buntings, foulques macroules, fuligules pochard and tufted duck, teals of winter, snipes of the marshes, etc
