The forest of Long Pond is a Forêt High of the south-east of the island of the Meeting, in the Indian Ocean. Located on the communal territory of Saint-Philippe, it shelters a Natural reserve of 68 hectares rich person in Bois of color and other endemic gasolines of the island. The remainder of the forest was classified in biological Réserve.
Established on a volcanic Casting relatively recent, of a few hundred years only, it shelters one of the ultimate vestiges of the wet Tropical forest basic altitude of the Mascareignes, locally called wood forest “of colors of Bottoms”. This vegetable formation formerly covered all the area with the Wind from 0 to 800 meters of altitude but remains today only with the state of scraps, on less than 5% of its surface of origin.
Classified in biological reserve as of 1958 out of 23 hectares, the Reserve of Long Pond was increased in 1981 with 68 hectares, dates to which it became the first natural reserve of the Meeting. Many scientific studies are undertaken there, mainly by the Université of the Meeting. The access inside the reserve is regulated but a botanical Sentier arranged near the reserve and a botanical guide make it possible to the visitors to discover all the richnesses of them.
The Pond-Long Natural reserve of Saint-Philippe is managed by the National office of the forests, with the support of the Ministère of ecology and sustainable development.
The Pond-Long natural reserve of Saint-Philippe is one of the last forests hygrophile primary education mégatherme basic altitude of the archipelago of Mascareignes. It is also one of the ecosystems terrestrial most studied by the researchers of the island of the Meeting.
