Forest of Hardt
The Hardt is a forest of plain characterized by a certain dryness (600 mm of rain per annum in the northern part). It extends from Kembs until Colmar, between the Ill and the the Rhine, on the old glacial alluvial cone of the Rhine.
It is the second forest of Alsace with its 13.000 hectares, behind the forest of Haguenau. Property of the Habsbourg, it returned to Louis XIV at the conclusion of the Guerre Thirty Year old. State-owned property, it is listed like special Protection zone Natura 2000. It constitutes not only largest charmaie natural of Europe, but also shelters very rare steppe lawns in Western Europe. The sessile oak is the other dominant gasoline in the middle of some pines and fruit trees (Cormier, Merisier, service-tree).
Fauna that one meeting consists there of common species: roe-deers, wild boars, stags, rabbits but also of remarkable species like the Bondrée apivore, the Peak mar, the fasciée Crested, the Lucanus kite.
