The forest of Coubre is a national forest which covers more 4 277 Hectare S in edge of the littoral of the Peninsula of Arvert, in Charente-Maritime, on the common S of the Mathes and of Tremblade.
It is a Forêt of maritime pines, of holm oaks, oaks stalk and Arbousier S which was planted at the beginning of the 19th century to contain the projection of the Sable S and to protect the site from the very active erosion S wind and marine.
Classified littoral forest of protection, it shelters a fauna varied in particular comprising stags Elaphe, Chevreuil S and Sanglier S.
In addition to the fact that it represents a considerable economic asset, with the exploitation of wood, the forest is a major element of the tourist landscape and comprises many marked out pedestrian paths for this reason, facilitating the walk and the orientation, of which that known as of the Vault, which leads to enigmatic the Village of Our-Lady-with-Buze, buried under sand at the 15th century and whose Chapelle reappears regularly with the liking of the movements of sand.

In the Years 1960, the Gemmage was still current in the forest, but almost disappeared today.
In 1976, the forest is devastated by a violent one Incendie who obliges to evacuate the animal Zoo of Palmyre in the urgency. Fortunately, the fire will stop to a few hundred meters hardly zoo.
At the time of the storm of December 1999, the forest suffered much, and the ten harvest years equivalent of maritime pines was cut down in only once.
