The forest of Compiegne is a domanial Forêt of Picardy near to Compiegne. Of a surface of 14.500 hectares, it constitutes the third main forest of France. It is rich as much in production of Bois (Chêne and Hêtre) that in Gibier.

Geography

The forest of Compiegne extends to north to the valley from the Aisne, in the west until those of the Oise and the Automne, in the east until the Ru S of Bern and Vandy; to the south (Champlieu, Morienval) the forest extends on the plate, the limit is conventional.

In a geometrical way, the contour of the forest forms a circle 15 km in diameter and of 92 km perimeter, its surface is of 14.500 ha.

The culminating point of the forest is the plain of high Palesne in South-east to 145 m of altitude.

The Aisne separates it from the Forêt of Laigue in north. In south-east, the forest of Compiegne is separated from the Forêt of Retz by 2,5 km of culture (on the level of Brassoir).

History

The places with the 21e century occupied by the forest are at the time Gallic a vast not very accessible marsh which are partially cultivated at the time Roman. Many vestiges of farms or Gallo-Roman habitats are found there.

The forest itself extends more to the east, surely near to the village of Cuise. It is called the forest of Cooks .

It is only tardily with the Moyen-âge that the wooded areas colonize the marshes then forsaken to compose the current forest.

The forest of Compiegne shelters few historical buildings like the Wagon of the armistice located in the clearing of the armistice close to Rethondes or the castles of Compiegne and Pierrefonds.

Ways and roads

The forest of Compiegne counts today 1.200 km of road and 311 crossroads baptized. The forest is arranged since the Moyen-âge for the practice of the Chasse. In 1521, at the time of, one traces four main axes (8 roads) which are cut to the crossroads of the Well of the King. Under Louis XIV, 54 new roads are drawn; under Louis XV 229.

These roads of hunting delimit Triangle S. the roads around the crossroads of the Well of the King, privileged place of hunting, form Octogone S.

In 1669, one starts to install signposts with each crossroads and along the forestry roads. The principal Carrefour S receive a characteristic signpost drawn under Charles X. Its size corresponds to the height of a rider. A red mark indicates the direction of the castle of Compiegne after the empress Eugenie was delayed in forest.

Remarkable trees

The oldest tree of the forest of Compiegne is a yew of more than nine hundred years (in 2005) planted in Saint-Pierre-in-Chastres.

The most imposing tree is the old oak Midsummer's Day from approximately eight hundreds - fifty years (in 2005). It is a Chêne reopens planted under holy Louis close to Saint-Jean-with-Wood. Its trunk measurement 2,5 m diameter. It is one of the oldest forest trees of France.

In a more general way, one does not count less than 5600 plant species and 6600 animal species.
