The forest of Compiegne is a domanial Forêt of Picardy near to Compiegne. Of a surface of 14.500 hectares, it constitutes the third main forest of France. It is rich as much in production of Bois (Chêne and Hêtre) that in Gibier.
In a geometrical way, the contour of the forest forms a circle 15 km in diameter and of 92 km perimeter, its surface is of 14.500 ha.
The culminating point of the forest is the plain of high Palesne in South-east to 145 m of altitude.
The Aisne separates it from the Forêt of Laigue in north. In south-east, the forest of Compiegne is separated from the Forêt of Retz by 2,5 km of culture (on the level of Brassoir).
The forest itself extends more to the east, surely near to the village of Cuise. It is called the forest of Cooks .
It is only tardily with the Moyen-âge that the wooded areas colonize the marshes then forsaken to compose the current forest.
The forest of Compiegne shelters few historical buildings like the Wagon of the armistice located in the clearing of the armistice close to Rethondes or the castles of Compiegne and Pierrefonds.
These roads of hunting delimit Triangle S. the roads around the crossroads of the Well of the King, privileged place of hunting, form Octogone S.
In 1669, one starts to install signposts with each crossroads and along the forestry roads. The principal Carrefour S receive a characteristic signpost drawn under Charles X. Its size corresponds to the height of a rider. A red mark indicates the direction of the castle of Compiegne after the empress Eugenie was delayed in forest.
The most imposing tree is the old oak Midsummer's Day from approximately eight hundreds - fifty years (in 2005). It is a Chêne reopens planted under holy Louis close to Saint-Jean-with-Wood. Its trunk measurement 2,5 m diameter. It is one of the oldest forest trees of France.
In a more general way, one does not count less than 5600 plant species and 6600 animal species.
