Forest of Bébour
Located on the communal territory of Saint-Beno4it cheese, the Forêt of Bébour is a Forêt High of the East of the Meeting. By its extent (more than 6000 ha), by its exceptional state of conservation and its staging (until the top of the Piton of Snows) it is one of the most remarkable natural forests of mountain of the Meeting and undoubtedly most famous. Perched between the Piton of Snows, the Plain of the cabbage trees and the circus of Salazie, to approximately 1300 m of altitude, the forest of Bébour-Bélouve is what one can call a forest cathedral.
One can reach it in the vehicle since the Plain-of-Cabbage trees. The forest road which it cross-piece gives then access to the Forêt of Bélouve, in north.
The forest of Bébour occupies the site of old a circus of erosion (the fourth of the island after Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos), filled by the lava of the last eruptions of the Piton of Snows.
Covered with a vegetation of altitude such as: Tamarin, mapou, catafaille, mahot, but also of thin, tan wood red, guava chestnut. Characterized by the tortuous trunks of the tamarins on which foams are papered, lichens, orchises, ferns. These many species crawl on the trunks to collect the light because of a very dense vegetation. The forest remains a source of revenue with the tamarin tops, noble wood, is a local material of construction and local cabinet work. It is one of the symbols of the creole craft industry. The principal threat which weighs on this forest is the vine maronne, species invading.
