In tonal harmony, a foreign note is a note not forming part of the current harmony, which is added or replaces the notes of any agreement classified - called real notes, precisely, in opposition to the foreign notes . A foreign note is thus “ foreign with the agreement in which it is ”, but not necessarily “ foreign with the tonality ”.

the field of the foreign notes is traditionally called “ artificial dissonant harmony ” - or more simply: “ artificial harmony ” -, in opposition to “ the natural harmony ” i.e. the field of the classified agreements - Agreement of three notes, Agreement of four notes and Agreement of five notes.

  • Any note foreign modifies the color of the primitive agreement by bringing a tension - a Dissonance generally - more or less important: it must thus be regarded as a gravitational note. Normally, the note which precedes it makes function of preparation - preparatory note - and notes it which succeeds to him brings the resolution - resolvent note .

  • According to whether the foreign note is added or replaces the one of the real notes of the agreement, and on this second assumption, according to whether this substitution is momentary or final , one can deal with three quite distinct categories.

Momentary substitution

A momentary substitution is a foreign note which replaces a real Note temporarily of the agreement. In this case, the harmonic tension of the agreement thus modified is function of the lasted and the situation of this foreign note.

Momentary substitution over key period

When a momentary substitution occurs on key period - or left strong time -, the agreement generally takes care of strong harmonic tensions, this is why a momentary substitution over key period is generally quantified. This first subcategory includes/understands the following families.

  • the delay.

  • the agreements of eleventh and thirteenth tonic.
  • majority of the appoggiaturas.

Momentary substitution over weak time

When a momentary substitution occurs on weak time - or left weak time -, the harmonic tensions on the agreement are generally less important: being usually regarded as a purely melody note , a momentary substitution over weak time does not amount. This second subcategory includes/understands the following families.

Final substitution

A final substitution is a foreign note which replaces a real Note definitively of the agreement, throughout all this one. There exists only one family of final substitution.

  • the agreement with faded note.

Generally, one understands by faded agreement with note - or, simpement, inflected chord -, a classified agreement whose height of at least of its real notes is modified by a deterioration. One can indeed deteriorate accidentally the fundamental , the third or the fifth of an agreement, the real note thus deteriorated substituent definitively with the natural note.

A faded real note must be carefully distinguished from a faded momentary substitution. Indeed, contrary to the latter which has only one transitory melody value, “ the faded real note forms integral part of the agreement”. Consequently, an agreement momentarily modified by the presence of one appoggiatura, of a embroidery or a Passing note, should not be regarded as an inflected chord.

When it occurs on key period - or left strong time -, deterioration should not be analyzed as the real note of an inflected chord that if the agreement to which it belongs is different from that which succeeds. In the other case, it should be regarded as a faded appoggiatura .

When it occurs on weak time - or left weak time -, deterioration should not be analyzed as the real note of an inflected chord that if the agreement to which it belongs is different from that which precedes. In the other case, it should be regarded as a chromatic passing note , or as a faded embroidery - according to whether the note in question is brought or not by chromatic Mouvement.

Addition

A addition is a foreign note which is added with the real notes with the agreement, throughout all this one. The foreign notes added are generally characterized by a very strong harmonic tension. These notes are divided into two families.
