A fore-and-aft sail is a nonsymmetrical veil of quadrangular form, the term would come from Latin auris ear , this explanation is corroborated by the English translation lugsail , word made up of lug ear and sail veil .

The Vergue which supports it is tilted, the part before being lower than the back part.

In the case of the fore-and-aft sail, the yard is called the horn or the peak. The horn is articulated on the mast by a shoe called encornat (or jaw of horn ) to hoist the fore-and-aft sail, two Drisse S are necessary: the rope of Mainsail and the rope of peak. A nonsymmetrical sail of the quadrangular type, but with livarde or Balestron, is also a fore-and-aft sail.
