Ford Madox Brown (Calais, April 16th 1821 - London, October 6th 1893) is a British painter , near to the movement préraphaélite.

Biography

Formed with Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, it settles in London towards 1846. It meets there Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, founders of the movement préraphaélite. These meetings encourage it to take its inspiration in the models of the 15th century, in particular Botticelli, which he admires over all, and from which he borrows for example the format of the medallion.

Its subjects touch at the same time with the Antiquité and the social news of the the United Kingdom victorien. Its style is characterized by the promptness of the colors and the refinement of the details.
