Summary of the final stage
64 matches are played at the time of the final tournament. In one 1st phase, the 32 teams are divided into 8 groups of 4 teams. Each team plays a match against each one of her 3 adversaries and the two first of each group are qualified for the 2nd phase which proceeds by direct elimination, of the eighth of finale until the final, played Berlin and designating the world champion team.
In spite of the good departure of teams like the Australia or the Ghana, the tournament was especially marked by the return to the domination of traditional the " large nations of the football". Four years after the World cup of 2002 which saw teams of North America (the United States), of Africa (Senegal) and of Asia (South Korea) to go relatively far in the competition, all the quarterfinalists of the edition of 2006 were European or South American.
The Brazil, champion in title and almost unanimously recognized like the favorite of the tournament before the beginning of the competition, was beaten 1-0 by the France in quarter-of-finale, and the Germany, vice-champion in 2002, lost in semi-final 2-0 against the Italy during the prolongations. The German team nevertheless gained her last match against the Portugal 3-1, to finish 3rd tournament.
The final , played Berlin on July 9th, 2006 saw the victory of the Italy vis-a-vis the France. At the end of the prescribed time, the score was of one everywhere, and no goal was marked during the prolongations. The Italy gained thanks to a meeting of Tirs to the goal 5-3. It was the first final between European countries since the success of the Italy in 1982 and the second final gained with the shootings with the goal after that of 1994.
The moment more discussed of the finale is without any doubt the reaction of anger of Zinedine Zidane following insults of the Italian defender Marco Materazzi. To a few minutes of the end of the match and end of his career, the French gave a blow of head in the chest of his adversary. The referee did not see confrontation but excluded Zidane after having spoken to the 4th referee.
The Italian victory does not rest on any player in particular. The 12 goals were in particular registered by 10 different players. So famous Italian defense, organized by the captain Fabio Cannavaro, largely contributed to the final victory of the team, having boxed only 2 goals throughout the competition (against its camp and one on penalty).
The France, in spite of a puffing departure in the phase of group, reached the final galvanized by a large performance of its captain Zinédine Zidane, who had announced that it would take his retirement after the World cup, and who was elected better player of the tournament, in front of the Italians Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Pirlo, the German striker Miroslav Klose finishing better striker of the tournament with 5 registered goals.
The tournament was marked by the big number of paperboards distributed by the referees. The players transfer themselves to address the record number of 345 yellow paperboards and 28 red paperboards, the match between the Portugal and the Netherlands contributing to him only with 16 yellows and 4 reds.
Cities selected and stages
Twelve towns of Germany were selected to accommodate the matches World cup 2006:It should be noted that, of the 12 stages which were useful for the World cup 2006, only one (the Zentralstadion of Leipzig) is located in old GDR (the Olympiastadion of Berlin was located in the western part of the city, therefore in the past in FRG). The towns of Bremen, Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf and Leverkusen saw their rejected candidature.
The stages of Cologne, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hanover, Munich and Nuremberg which bear from now on the name of sponsors, are renamed for the duration of the final stage of the World cup: " FIFA WM Stadion Köln" , for the enclosure of Cologne, " FIFA WM Stadion Dortmund" , for the enclosure of Dortmund, etc

Chronicle of the platforms
After a beginning of competition marked by scenes of fraternization between supporters Portuguese and Angolan or English and Trinidadian for example, the first violent incidents take place, as awaited, at the time of the Germany-Poland match on June 14th, 2006. The confrontations took place in the streets of Dortmund before and after the match and the police force carried out 300 arrests. This match constituted the most sulfurous poster of the calendar of the first turn. The fans of all the teams were massively present in platform and the environment of the matches is excellent. Many normally neutral spectators thus took the colors of one of the two teams which they were going to see playing, to add to the festival. If the English were, by their number, most impressive, those of South Korea, Switzerland or Croatia were particularly many and active. Disappointment on this level for the fans of the team of France who were rather discrete at the time of the France-Switzerland match. One hoped three admittedly supporters Swiss for one to support French in the stage of Stuttgart, however as near to the French border as of the Swiss border.
At the time of the match Argentinian - Serbia-Montenegro, the anthems were whistled. The French anthem was also whistled to him by the Spanish supporters at the time of the eighth of finale Spain - France.
One could note also much whistles at the time of the semi-final Germany - Italy when the Italian players were in possession of the balloon, even if the precise reasons remain fuzzy. That is surely due to the fact that Germany strongly hoped for the final in residence.
At the time of the semi-final of the July 5th Portugal - France, the player portuguais Cristiano Ronaldo was the object of whistles with each time it was in possession of the balloon. That can be explained by its attitude at the time of the quarterfinal vis-a-vis England, it would have caused the red paperboard of the English attacker Wayne Rooney, its fellow-member with Manchester United.
One to support French is deceased because of heat a few hours before the France-Switzerland match.
One can attend in the streets in Germany a strong apparent support for the national team: many German flags decorate cars and windows.
Finances
Economic effects for Germany
As of the year 2001, Germany is in an economic crisis. By organizing the second plus great event (judged according to the number of televiewers) of the world, the German government hopes to be able to strengthen its economy. To achieve this goal, one launched, together with the federation of German industry , a publicity campaign with the title 1. FC Deutschland 06 , which is supported by the council of sport of the German Parliament. Launched in spring 2005, it lasted until the beginning of the year 2006. The goal is to represent Germany in the whole world like country of holidays, but also like places economic and scientific. For the legislative period, where the Socialists and the greens were with the capacity, she was regarded as socialist electoral campaign. The Minister for the economy of this time, Wolfgang Clement, predicted in the long run an increase in the gross domestic product of 8 billion euros, especially thanks to the 5 million additional lodgings. The Steering Committee of world expects 3.2 million spectators, of which a million from abroad. However, it is very difficult to envisage the long-term effects on economic development because of the not very reliable forecasts. In spite of the additional benefit of taxes, the world one could also cause very high costs because of problems of traffic and safety, but also because of pollution.
According to an analysis of the German postal bank published in January 2005, the world one was to bring an additional growth of 0.5% to the country host. Consumption should increase by two to three billion euros.
According to a study of the chamber of commerce and industry of Munich published in May 2005, the world cup will make it possible to create tens of thousands of new places of work, including 20.000 in Bavaria. As the international center of the media is in Munich, it is especially the Bavarian capital which will benefit from the new places of work. Not only the gastronomy and the hotels, but also of other branches of service will have benefit additional thanks to this event.
In all the twelve towns of match are modern stages, which were modernized or built. For that, the German government and the organizers had paid between 48 and 280 million euros, is 1.38 billion overall. To compare: at the time of the world one of 1974, also in Germany, one had invested 242 million DM, that is to say 124 me. euros.
The ministry for the economy announced to invest 3.7 billion euros in the construction of roads and 500 million in the sale of tickets. The representation before the world one had already cost 400 million euros. The German ministers want to thus grant 24 million more to the German Federation of Football DFB. Nevertheless, the construction trade will not profit much, since this sector is one of the least productive.
Those which will profit more than one economic point of view will be the FIFA with its members federations as well as the famous brands of article of sport as equipment suppliers. The FIFA can expect gross profits records thanks to the prices of entered, the publicity and the rights of television and marketing. It is not for only the sport is an economic factor with an importance which increases more, according to the experts.
Sponsors
The majority of world are financed by sponsors. With a sum of 360M of euros (average: 26moi/sponsor), the principal international sponsors of the FIFA pay the double of the benefit of the sale of tickets. The official partners of the FIFA are: Anheuser-Busch, Adidas, Avaya, Coca-Cola, Continental Airlines, Deutsche Telekom, Emirates, Fujifilm, Gillette, Hyundaï, MasterCard, McDonalds, Philips, Toshiba and Yahoo!.60 me. additional are paid by the national sponsors. The Steering Committee introduced on December 7th to Berlin the last national sponsor: Deutsche Bahn (German railroads). The other national sponsors are the Postbank (postal allemande bankbanks), Obi, Hamburg-Mannheimer, EnBW and Oddset, which will be able to make publicity for their engagement only in Germany, whereas the international sponsors have the right to do it in the whole world.
Premiums for the federations
Not only the sponsors will benefit from world, but also the equipment suppliers with the sale of the shirts of players. Part of the benefit will be versed with the members federations or participating. Approximately 262.9 me. euros will be versed to the participants. Each of the 32 participants of world receives 10.37 me. Switzerland francs (that is to say 8.21 me of euros) of premiums of the FIFA for their participation. Thus, the federations of football do not benefit solely in the field from prestige, but also economically. They will receive 332 me Swiss francs (262.9 me of euros), that is to say an increase of 38% vis-a-vis that of 2002 in South Korea and in Japan (Total sum: 190 me of euros).
Tickets of entry
The first phase of the international sale of the tickets of entry took place from February 1st to March 31st, 2005.
In the stages, there were only sitted places. They were divided into four categories. A ticket for the category 4, most accessible, for the 47 matches of the preliminary round cost 35 euros. The prices for the tickets of the finale in Berlin amounted with 600 euros (1st category). According to the Steering Committee, approximately 1,12 me of the 3,2 me of tickets were available on line. The majority of the tickets of entry were reserved to the sponsors, with the German federation of football DFB, the other participating federations, the FIFA and customers ready to pay enormous sums. A little more than one million people 195 countries contributed for the 812.000 tickets during this first phase of sale. The FIFA received 8,7 me orders of valid tickets, of which 6,25moi of Germany. 2,3 me of orders resulting from an attempt at handling of the United States were not accepted, like 1,3moi of orders of people having already ordered tickets. That made a ticket on 10 candidates. Already after 48 hours, the number of requests had exceeded that of tickets available. For the first time, the tickets of entry were personalized. For safety reasons, the tickets were intransmissible and the purchasers were to be recorded. Excluded from this rule were the few 100.000 spectators " VIP". Between the FIFA and the organizers, there were discussions which related to the prices. The Steering Committee held so that it has a social component. Finally, the price (the cheaper) was fixed at 35 euros, which was 16 euros in lower part of the minimal price in South Korea and in Japan. Moreover, the ticket allowed, for the first time during a world cup, to use the public means of transport free.
