The 17th Football world cup (official name: 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan , world cup FIFA 2002 Korea/Japan) was held May 31st at June 30th, 2002 in South Korea and the Japan, the first Asian hosts of the competition. For the first time the International federation of football association had entrusted the organization of it to two countries. The test brought together 32 teams, of which three were described as office: the two above-named organizers and the world champion titrates of it (the France).

The cut was gained by the Brésil, vis-a-vis the Germany (2: 0).

Summary

This world cup was gained by the Brazilian seleção vis-a-vis the German Mannschaft. It is the fifth time that Brazil gained this prestigious tournament, a record, but the first that the two nations met there in spite of their many participations.

The champion in title, the team of France, on the other hand was eliminated as of the first turn without to have gained match - it had not arrived since the rapid elimination of Brazil in 1966 - nor marked of goal. One also could see other favorites being made eliminate in a way enough surprising like the Argentine and the Portugal with the first turn, the Italy in eighth of finale.

In addition, the tournament saw the emergence of the African and Asian nations like the Senegal (quarterfinals), the South Korea (semi-finals, a first for an Asian team) and, to a lesser extent, the Japan (eighth of finale). One also could note the beautiful performances of the the United States (quarterfinals) and of the Turkey (third place).

Were in particular distinguished there Ronaldo (Brazil) with 8 registered goals, like Rivaldo (Brazil) and Miroslav Klose (Germany) with five goals each one.

The competition was sullied by a big number of decisive errors of arbitration so much so that a Théorie of the plot in favor of the Korean outsiders was advanced. The advanced main issue at the time of this World cup was the poor physical status of the players of the great nations. Indeed, in order to avoid the Season of monsoons, World cup 2002 opened as of the May 31st, that is to say for certain championships, a few days only after the end of the season. The physical preparation was almost non-existent for much, partly explaining the fall of some of the big favorites to the profit of emergent nations of the Football.

Stages

The final stage proceeded in 20 different cities (10 in each country host), in stages of modern and recent construction, including one great majority was built for the event.

The 32 teams were divided in eight groups (A-H) in the following way:

In each group, the teams disputed three matches, against each other team. The two first of the classification of each hen were qualified for the eighth of finale from which the tournament was with direct elimination. Thus, the format of the competition was similar to the cuts of 1998 and 2006 to this close the two first of a group could be found in semi-final, as it was the case for Brazil and Turkey - the fitting of the eighth of finales in the cuts of 1998 and 2006 prevents such a meeting before the final.

Raised problems

The Co-organization

Japan and South Korea had made requests separated with the FIFA but obtained in a surprising way the joint organization of the event.

This Co-organization posed high costs of Logistique because of the distance between the places. Moreover, frictions took place between the countries, yet fully not reconciled after the occupation of Korea by Japan between 1905 and 1945. During the preparation, disagreements emerged about the localization of the key matches (opening and finale), about the countries in the official name of the competition and the official mascots. At the time of the competition, the emperor Akihito, contrary to the tradition of presence of the Head of State of the country host to the match of opening, refused to go to Korea for the occasion. However, this animosity was not shared by the Japanese supporteurs who supported the brilliance Korean course, while the probed of the two countries considered that the event was going to bring closer the two nations.

The FIFA announced in 2004 that it would not accept joint requests for organization.

The arbitration

The competition was sullied by criticisms supported concerning the arbitration, in particular because of the lack of experience of certain referees, chosen for reasons of policy of widening to the emergent countries. In particular, Italy saw itself refusing several goals during the compétititon; theirs refused in their match lost against South Korea in eighth of finale and the newspapers Italian, saw there, with the expulsion of Francesco Totti in the prolongations, a heavy error of arbitration. The Italian Entraîneur indicates: “I do not include/understand why we had to be victims bad decisions. I think that gaining it should be Italy. ” The refusal of a Goal out of gold and a Off-side announced at the time of the match Spain - Korea in quarterfinals were also criticized by the Spanish press. Similar reproaches were made with the arbitration at the time of the match of first turn between Portugal and Korea. Other important, but nondecisive errors of arbitration as for the exit of the match, were made; one will be able to quote the meeting between the Belgium and Brazil in eighth of finale, where the referee cancels in a litigious way a goal of the Belgian player Marc Wilmots.

charges of conspiracy aiming at supporting Korea were carried against the organization of the world one. While recognizing errors of arbitration, the president of the commission of the referees of the FIFA contradicted these allegations.
