The 16th edition of the Football world cup was held in France June 10th with the July 12th 1998.

The beginning of this tournament was endeuillé by the disappearance of the copresident of the Steering Committee of the competition (with Michel Platini) Fernand Sastre, which died of the continuations of a long illness.

France, at it, qualified itself for the first time of its history for a final of World cup and beat the Brésil, holding of the title, 3 goals with 0 thanks to one doubled of Zinedine Zidane followed by a goal of Emmanuel Petit (the 1000e goal registered by the team of France since its beginnings in 1904).

After this victory, France was going to know one period of joy and enthusiasm, happy of this triumph and proud of its players. The July 14th, the president of the Republic Jacques Chirac honoured the world champions by receiving them with the garden-party with the Elysium.
