The competition

The opening ceremony is held at the stage of the Camp Nou in Barcelona on Sunday, June 13, 1982. Surprised: the stage is not full. It is the first sporting great event with being diffused on the five continents (one year after the marriage of the Prince Charles and Lady Diana), in 140 countries and in front of a billion televiewers. In same time, English and Argentinian clash in the Falklands, as a streamer deployed by Argentinian supporters point out it (“Tired Malvinas its argentinas”), while the very famous Helenio Herrera had just declared: “football it is the war”. It is the precise moment or emerge opportunely two doves of Peace (according to Picasso): one formed by 2300 children very of white vêtus and the other real one that young Spanish lets escape from a balloon.

However, the match of opening proceeds, in spite of a little sad environment, and offers a new surprise, with victory 1-0 of Belgium over the outgoing champion, Argentina, taken along by one very awaited Diego Maradona which makes its great beginnings out of World cup in front of the public of its new club, the “Barça” has just bought it for 50 franc million (7,5 million euros), record transfer.

But what marks especially the test, knowing the end result, is the bad result of the future semi-finalists. Only Poland knows, thanks to the attackers Grzegorz Lato and Zbigniew Boniek, an alarm clock at the time of the third match (5-1 vis-a-vis Peru). Italy qualifies itself thanks to three match null in three meetings, but with only one goal moreover than Cameroun. Worse still, the meeting between the West Germany and Austria give place to a resounding not-match. A victory by one or two goals of the West Germany making it possible to the two teams to qualify itself, a German goal is registered quickly and the two teams, which according to any obviousness concluded an arrangement, devote the remainder of the part to a continuation of master keys without interest. In any event, the Austria-FRG meeting will have as a consequence objectifies the elimination of Algeria of Rabah Madjer, which, against any waiting, had gained 2-1 against the West Germany on June 16th, 1982. To prevent that this kind of problem cannot be renewed, FIFA decides that in the future, the last two matches of each group will take place at the same time. This principle will be extended later to the last matches of the phases of qualification. This Austria-FRG match will be later called “the match of shame”. The truth will be made in 2007 when a German ex-player declares that there was a non-aggression pact because the two teams knew themselves qualified, that whose majority of the observers suspected well within sight of the images of the “match”.

The second round is marked by the Italian alarm clock, and especially that of Paolo Rossi. This attacker had just finished purging a suspension (curtailed for the occasion of the World cup) due to its implication in a history of bribes related to the sporting lotto (business known as of the “totonero”). Invisible at the time of the first turn, it nevertheless had kept the confidence of the trainer. It marks a blow of glare with a triplet vis-a-vis Brazil. To also note that the decisive match of the group has opposes the USSR to Poland in full time of Solidarność, always in the Nou Camp, four streamers with the colors of the trade union are laid out on each platform. But contrary to the match of opening, this time, the police officers will intervene to tear off the aforementioned streamers with the great dissatisfaction with the public. The Poles are satisfied with a destructive play, tie 0-0 qualifying them for the semi-finals. Boniek and Smolarek show even several intimidating operations of anti-play. Before the match, Boniek had however announced: “It will be the match of the matches”. But one cannot say that will be really the case from a point of view footballistic, this “local derby” as called it certain observers exceeded it is true the strict sporting aspect.

The most outstanding semi-final is the meeting between France and the West Germany on July 8th at the stage Sanchez Pizjuan of Seville. One retains firstly the aggression of the German guard Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston. Struck full whip with the head, Battiston is taken along urgently to the hospital, while Schumacher finishes the match without same to be informed. In prolongation, the Germans, carried out 3-1, succeed in the exploit to return to the score to qualify itself finally with the Tirs with the goal. In the other semi-final, Italy, or rather Rossi, is essential 2-0 vis-a-vis Poland, without suspended Boniek, which had still forced the tie at the time of the first turn. The Poles seem very contracted, to believe that to eliminate the Soviet big brother has suffices for their happiness.

Poland obtains the third place vis-a-vis the team of the French “reservists”, then Italy imposes itself finally upon a tired German team. Italy obtains its third sacring thus (becoming the first European team to reach that point). Rossi, outstanding for the sixth time, rises with the rank of better striker of the competition, and the guard Dino Zoff becomes, at forty years, the oldest player, the oldest captain and the only guard-captain of the history to raise the world trophy.

Among the outstanding meetings, one can quote excel it Brésil - Soviet Union, always in Seville (the Brazilian ones are essential 2-1 after to be a long time carried out 0-1), dramatic USSR-Scotland in Malaga (tie 2-2 qualifies the USSR de Blokhine and Dassaiev against Scotland de Souness, Dalglish and Strachan), England-France with the opening of the score dice the 27e second by the British Bryan “Robbo” Robson. Also, Argentina-Hungary at the stage Jose Rico Perez of Alicante on Friday, June 18, four days after the end of the war in the Falklands and Argentinian capitulation. The selector César Luis Menotti announces with its players before the match: “Now do not think any more of the war, it is finished. Do not think any more from now on that with football, therefore we are here”. Heard remarks, the albicelestes are essential 4-1 with two goals of Maradona. At the time of France-Kuwait, the brother of the Emir (death in 1990 during the Iraqi invasion) enters on the ground to dispute a goal marked by the French and obtains win. The Kuwaiti team being pulled by Brazilian the Carlos Alberto Parreira, which had succeeded libano-Brazilian the Mário Zagallo. Finally one has been able to quote surprising it Belgium-Hungary, with the Magyar team which presents five attackers as at the time of WM, of ever seen in modern football for 25 years, because it must obligatorily be essential to be qualified. But finally, the red devils tear off by miracle a tie 1-1.

A record was beaten, that of the number of goals marked by a team in a match: 10, by the Hungary against the El Salvador with Elche.

To also note that England is eliminated from the second turn without to have lost a match, which will involve as from 1986 the suppression of the formula of the second turn by group, with a return to direct elimination.

The tournament is also marked by the mediocrity of the Spanish team, however in front of her public, and which goes from disappointment in disappointment.

For much, the two best teams of the test are Brazil of Socrates (the older brother of Spoke) and Zico, with football samba, and France and its magic medium ground (Platini, Giresse, Tigana, Genghini) so much so that they are called “Brazilian Europe”, preceding their brilliant victory at the time of the Euro 84. But these two teams hardly worked the defensive rigor, contrary to Squadra Azzurra, and it is in all logic that the transalpine ones gain the trophy although genius lack, but much of solidarity and safety. The first since 44 years, thanks to their Catenaccio always functioning with wonder, an effective medium, and an opportunist and realistic attack, for the greatest pleasure of the president Sandro Pertini, 85 years, the first Socialist at this station. Two Italian players are particularly highlighted: the striker Paolo Rossi, and legendary the 40 year old guard-captain Dino Zoff.
