Summary

Format

The format of the competition changed since the edition of 1970: 16 qualified nations, divided into four groups of four. The two first of each group reach the second round, where they are found again in two hens of four. Gaining each hen play the final, and the second the match for the third place.

Germans against Germans

The first turn sees proceeding a match in highly political matter. Indeed, the team of West Germany and the team of East Germany clash in Hamburg: it is the first and the last time that these two teams meet on a football field (a nonprofessional West German selection had lost against the Easts Germany at the time of the Olympic Games of summer of 1972). At the time when this match proceeds, the two teams are already qualified for the second round, but they dispute the first place of the group. GDR gains the match, and the first place. With the following turn, those meet the Brésil and the Netherlands, matches for which the Supporter S West Germans had bought the tickets in preparation for the victory of their team. The defeat of FRG caused several changes in the group, changes salutary since they carried out the team to the title.

The final

The West Germany and the Netherlands carried on their way until the final. Germany was taken along by the charismatic defender Franz Beckenbauer, whereas the Netherlanders and their system “football total” had illuminated the competition, to the image of their star Johan Cruijff. The Dutch superiority is not long in being expressed at the time of the finale. After hardly a minute of play and a series of master keys showing the great collective control of the Dutchmen, Cruijff is taclé by Uli Hoeneß in the penalty area. The Germans did not touch yet the balloon which they are already carried out 1-0 (Penalty transformed by Neeskens). Germany fights to make up for its lost time, and with the 26e minute she sees herself allotting a penalty discussed by the British referee, after a fall of Bernd Hölzenbein in Dutch surface. Paul Breitner is given the responsability to draw it and equalizes for the Germans. These two Penalty S are the first in a final of world cup. Germany pushes, but parviet not to be marked, until the 43e minute, where Gerd Müller registered, in its characteristic style, the second German goal, its 68e and the last within the national team, because it takes its international retreat at the end of the competition.

The second half-time sees occasions on the two sides, Müller being seen even refusing a goal for off-side. Another penalty could have been whistled for the Germans for a fault on Hölzenbein with the 85ère minute. Germany, already champion of Europe in 1972, also gains the world cup 1974, thus marking its supremacy in the football of the time.

Better striker

The Pole Grzegorz Lato is the best striker of the tournament by marking seven goals. With its goal finally, Gerd Müller becomes the player having marked the most goals at the time of final stages of world cup with 14 achievements in its career. He precedes thus the record of Just Fontaine (13 goals, but in only one world cup). This record is beaten only in 2006 by Ronaldo with 15 goals, but at the time of three final stages.
