Walloon football

Football was born in Wallonia as of the end from the 19th century.

F.C.Liégeois, related to the baptismal font by members of Liege Cyclist' S Union, Protin at the head, teases its first balloon on the lawn of the cycle-racing track of Boverie. It is one of the pioneers of Belgian football. With Verviers, it takes part in the foundation of the federation and watch the example by conquering the first two national titles. During more than ten years, only the province of Liege counts clubs in Wallonia. The day before the war, on 107 affiliated in the country, there are of it thirty in Liege, eight in Hainaut, none in the provinces Namur and Luxembourg. The principal ones are already in place: F.C.Liégeois (1892), Verviers F.C. (1895) which will become C.S.Verviers in 1903, Standard (1898), Seraing (1900), U.S.Tournai (1902), F.C.Tilleur (1903), S.C.Charleroi (1904), R.C.Tournai (1907), Olympic Charleroi (1911), A.A.Louvièroise (1912).

On a total of 65 clubs which played more high level since the institution of the championship, the six greater agglomerations of the country generated 33 of them, including seven in Wallonia: the Standard, F.C.Liégeois, Flax stripper, Montegnée, Seraing, Olympic and Sporting of Charleroi.

Today, Hainaut has three clubs in the elite of Belgian football with Sporting of Charleroi, Mons and Mouscron, it has there nothing any more but the Standard for the Province of Liege.
