Foot of pilot
In the maritime field, the foot of pilot is a safety margin. The foot of pilot is often associated with a height which one adds to the draft of a ship.
To insert a ship in a port, it is necessary to calculate the depth of water available. The latter must theoretically be at least equal to the Tirant of water of the ship. Although the phenomenon is studied closely by specialists, the variations height of water are not always exact because of the winds, currents and other local disturbances, the marine good sense wants that one does not grant a total confidence to these theoretical calculations. The pilot in entrance head to the port, adopts a safety margin which one names foot of pilot . The term is applied in its direction of safety margin to much of other situations.
