Food with cutting

A food with cutting is a Power supply whose regulation is ensured by an electrotechnical component used in commutation (generally a Transistor). This operating process is opposed to that of the linear food in which the electrotechnical component is used in linear mode.

The component of commutation is used to generate a rectangular alternating voltage of relatively high frequency (generally more than 20 Khz) starting from the tension of the sector rectified beforehand. After passage in a transformer which ensures the galvanic insulation, this tension is rectified and filtered in a continuous tension. The control device of the component of commutation adapts the cyclic Rapport permanently rectangular signal so that the power of instruction is provided in exit.

The food with cutting strongly developed since the years 1980 to mitigate the disadvantages of the linear food: high weight and poor yield. They are used from now on in all the electronic devices “general public”.

Comparison compared to the linear food

The food with cutting offers many advantages on the linear food:

  • the power dissipated in the electrotechnical component used in commutation is less than when it is used in linear mode. Consequently, the output of the food is better, and the radiator of dissipation is of more modest size;
  • the transformer functions at a frequency much higher than that of the sector (more than 20 Khz against 50 or 60 Hz), which makes it possible to reduce its size considerably (see the Relation of Boucherot).

The food with cutting is thus much smaller and lighter, than the linear food. Moreover, they have a better output.

However, they generate a relatively important noise, due to the rectangular signal (rich in harmonics) at the quench frequency. This limitation makes them unsuitable to certain applications.
