FON is a Spanish company created by Martin Varsavsky the November 4th 2005 and which works for the division of the Connection S Internet based on the Wi-Fi around a Communauté   ; its French subsidiary company was created the March 26th 2006.

To adhere to network FON can be done of three façons :

  • according to the Linus  model;: one shares his connection at home and one can thus use those of the other members free.

  • according to the Bill  model;: identical to the Linus model, and in more FON transfers with the member 50% of the amount of the " pass" bought on its access point (even if those are then used on other access points).

  • according to the Alien  model;: his connection is not shared but one must buy " pass" (3 Euros for 1 day, or 10 EURO for 5 days) to connect itself on one of the access points FON.

To become Linus or Bill, it is necessary to share part of its connection Internet.

To the beginning, FON distributed a free software to be installed on the access point Wi-Fi of the subscriber. WRT54G (except version 5 and +) and WRT54GL of Linksys were supported.

Since October 2006, a router wifi, Fonera, is proposed by FON. It can be obtained for 20€ (port included/understood) starting from the sponsorship of Fonero (adherent with network FON).

This router made up of a chipset Atheros (until 54Mbits), of a memory flash of 4Mo and a RAM of 16Mo functions thanks to the system openwrt with a core Linux 2.4.

Will fonera presents 2 different SSID, the first named by MyPlace defect is quantified, it is used to reach Internet and with the lan, the second named by defect FON_AP is opened and not quantified, it makes it possible to share part of its connection to Internet (in mode Bill or Linus).

The community is made up of several tens of thousands of members at present.
