Folia
Folia is one of oldest European musical topics the. For more than three centuries, more than 150 type-setters have used it in their works. One can have an idea of the passion caused by this topic by reading what says Robert de Visée in the introduction of sound Livre of guittarre : “. one nor will not find either madnesses of Spain. It of short so much of verses of which all the concerts resound, that IE pourois only rebattre madnesses of the others. ”
The topic of Folia:
The first publications of this topic date from the middle of the 17th century but it is probably much older still (song of shepherd Rodrigo Martinez of the Cancionero de Palacio, 15th century).
Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1672, Arcangelo Corelli in 1700, Alessandro Scarlatti in 1710, Antonio Vivaldi in his sonata N°12 Opus 1 (about 1712) and its opera Orlando Furioso in 1727, Johann Sebastian Bach in its cantata known as “of the peasants” in 1742, etc, tasted all with the envoûtant happiness of this repetitive topic. An alternative of this topic gave rise to a Danse of Bal very in vogue in France at the beginning of the 18th century: the Madnesses of Spain .
The passion for the folia decreases during the 19th century and knows a renewal with 20th with, in particular, Rachmaninov in its Variations on a topic of Corelli (1931) or Manuel María Ponce and its Variations on “Folia de España” and Running away for guitar. Since, it was frequently used by the type-setters most varied as by Vangelis for the film Conquest off paradise .
