Analyzes
Each movement is based on a poem of Mallarmé, energy of the poem of youth " Gift of the poème" (1865) for the first movement with late the " Tombeau" (1897) for the last. Swell does not take again the poems of Mallarmé in entirety, but in the car some selected worms (the first movement uses only the first towards poem of Mallarmé, and the last only the last ones towards). The soprano sings little, it rather represents an instrument among the others than a soloist. One could say that the organization of the poems by chronological order of composition reconstituted a kind of biography of Mallarmé, assumption supported by the fact that work was completed on the word " mort" (the last clearly understandable word).
The musical language of Pli according to fold is atonal, and only some instruments play dual employment (same notes). Cece is typical style of Swell, and shows the influence that Anton Webern had on its work.
It has a dynamic form relatively broad: the liminal movements are written for great units, the second and the fourth movements intended for smaller formations, and the third central movement for ten instruments and the soprano, underlining the general tendency of work start and be completed in a strong way, to deafen itself in the central part. The first movement starts with a sound shock immediately followed by a silence, and work closes on the last and fast Crescendo.
Igor Stravinski described Pli according to fold like " at the same time completely monotonous and charming in its monotonie".
