The fodder is a Décoration carried in Uniforme by the members of a military unit (Régiment, Navire, etc) or civil (for example the body of Sapeurs-pompiers) French, itself decorated at the time of bravery private individuals or acts of war.

The fodder one is carried by the members of the unit exclusively during their time of service within this unit. The fodder one being the attribute meaning a collective decoration, it only is seldom carried to in an individual capacity. (cf below).

Origin

  • It goes back to the end of the XVI century. It comes from the agricultural medium, it was in the beginning a simple cord with fodder carried around the shoulder by the dragons Autrichiens without tags. Napoleon 1st gave him the name of fodder with the different colors; hussards in yellow and artillerists in red. it will be removed at the end of the war 1870. In April 1916, a ministerial decision ratified the fodder one such as we know it.

Description and port

It is about a braided cord which goes to the left shoulder of the Uniforme. One of the ends of the braid to the form of a Clover, the other end carries a tag, i.e. a metal part conical, according to a text of April 21st, 1916, the tag of fodder is out of linked metal, there exist engraved tags of reasons to the weapons or emblems miltaires. Above the tag is a node with four turns and a cord.

Usually, the clover and the cord passed in the button of the shoulder pad of the uniform (left side), the braid passing under the armpit. The fodder one can also go “in battle”: in this case, the cord is fixed on a button of the drill plate.
