Focke-Wulf FW 190

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger is a single-seat Fighter plan used by the Germany Nazi during the Second world war, starting from 1941. It never succeeds in replacing completely the Messerschmitt Bf 109 like principal hunter of the Luftwaffe, although it is higher to him in the absolute and in spite of more than twenty thousand produced planes. However, thanks to its versatility resulting from a modular design, it gave rise to a great number of derived models which made it possible to replace the Junkers Ju 87 (Stuka) like plane of support of the troops on the ground, and the Messerschmitt Bf 110 like heavy hunter to fight against the bombers, when these the last two planes had become too much vulnerable to continue to be sent to the combat.

Design

The plane was ordered by the ministry for the German air (RLM) in 1937, to assist the Messerschmitt Bf 109, which only started to enter in service. What imposed the choice of an engine different from the Daimler-Benz dB 601 on liquid cooling, to dedicate the production of this one to the hunter of Willy Messerschmitt. With the general surprise, and against the practices in vogue in Europe for the hunters single-engined aircrafts, Kurt Tank, chief engineer of Focke-Wulf , chose a radial engine with air cooling, the BMW 139. To limit the disadvantage which the more important frontal section of this engine represented, it wrapped it in an aerodynamic engine cowling very adjusted, with a turbine of cooling by very characteristic Air Force in the annular air intake just behind the spinner.

Of monocoque and metal construction, the fuselage was built in two sections, that front, energy of the partition firebreak until behind the pilot, containing the cockpit, the armament and the ammunition, and strapped in lower part of the alloy floor of Aluminum, two respectively car-sealing tanks of 232 and 292 Liter S, that postpones running until the drift. The aerofoil, it also was of steel construction, the two wings being interdependent by the Longeron front. This modularity of construction made it possible to split the production in several small independent workshops, which became very useful towards the end of the war. Contrary to the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it drew a landing gear to broad way (opening towards outside), retractable in the thickness of the wing by two electrical motors, and a caster of tail made also retractable by a system of cables and pulleys.

The prototype Fw 190 V1 flies for the first time on June 1st 1939, with the hands of Hans Sanders, the pilot chief of the company, and quickly it is dispatched in the center of test of Rechlin of the Luftwaffe. In October, the second prototype Fw 190 V2 east provides to the authorities for the tests of armament, with four Mitrailleuse S MG 17. A pair being placed on the top of the engine, drowned in the engine cowling and another in the wing roots, all the four draw between the blades from the propeller and are thus synchronized. Following wind tunnel tests which show the aerodynamic absence of advantage of the model wrapping of the careenage of propeller, one rebuilt the two prototypes with a more conventional engine cowling. This modification makes it possible to regulate, partly, the problems encountered on the two prototypes, on the level of the insulation of the cockpit with exhaust fumes, and the temperature. this one reaching 55°C sometimes.

But Tank is not satisfied with the BMW 139, which appears too not very powerful and little adapted, it decides to replace it by a BMW 801, which will be conceived in urgency and specifically for the plane by BMW. This new radial, of fourteen cylinders instead of ten eights, is appreciably of the same diameter, but it is heavier of 160 kg and a little longer. Fw 190 V3 and V4, already too advanced to be modified are used for static tests, then reinforced, and Fw 190 V5 is redrawn to embark the new engine. The cell is reinforced to support the increase in the power and the cockpit is moved back, the mass of the plane reaches 3400 kg, that is to say an increase of 25%, the wing load passing it from 186 to 227 kg/m ². The handiness and the climbing speed are appreciably affected, but Hermann Göring, nevertheless are impressed by the demonstrations in flight, and decide the immediate production of a preproduction of forty specimens, indicated Fw 190 A-0 .

Following an accident with rolling with a vehicle of track, V5 was redrawn by the engineers, with an increased aerofoil, under the designation of V5g for Gross (large). The modification improves behavior in flight appreciably and is then applied to the preproduction, starting from V15. The BMW 801 developed in the urgency still suffers from one tendency to overheating. In a certain effervescence, Focke-Wulf and BMW being rejected mutually the responsibility, the abandonment of the program being even considered, the problem despite everything, is about solved, mainly by the addition of cooling ribs on the engine cowling to the back of the engine. Henceforth, the engine will be delivered directly by BMW, in a unit baptized Motoranlage ( power unit ) and including/understanding at the same time the engine, the cap and practically all the accessories. This unit is assembled of a block by a simple bolting on the cell.

The evolution of the hunters Fw 190 has

The ministry for the German air, in the middle of 1941, decides the setting in production of the apparatus under the name of Fw 190 A-1 with the factories of Marienbourg and Bremen, with 102 specimens. It is sent within the JG 26, to be tested operationally in the west, vis-a-vis RAF. The engine continues to pose problems of heating, involving some accidents, and the pilots are then rather reticent to move away from the aerodromes. The armament is still insufficient in spite of the addition of two MG-FF outside the machine-guns of wing, but Focke-Wulf, up to now by did not succeed in obtaining more powerful weapons to go up on the plane. The apparatuses are equipped with two radios, FuG-25 and FuG-7, the last being used for the air-to-ground connection. Thereafter, part of these planes will be been driven by more modern engines, after a passage in factory, giving rise to a1/U1 with BMW 801 D1 and to a1/U2 with D2.

In August, the factory Arado of Warnemunde, and machines it AGO Oschersleben start, they also, to produce the Fw 190 A-2 , whose armament is finally reinforced by the replacement of the machine-guns of wing, by two guns Mauser MG 151/20 supplied with two hundred blows. Moreover, thereafter the majority of A-2 are still armed with their two MG-FF them also of 20 mm, fed each one by a charger drum of 55 shells, assembled outside the MG 151, this total of four guns, gives them a firepower devastator. This model remains in production for six months during which 888 specimens are produced. In the course of production, the engine changes first of all for a BMW 801C-2 slightly more powerful, finally the BMW 801 D-2. This last engine, whose design was completely re-examined, is finally completely reliable and definitively eliminates the engine failures which obstructed the plane since the beginning of its career, it will become the standard engine of all series A.

In 1942, A-2 yields the place to A-3, the first are still seen been driven by C-2 engines, but D2 quickly becomes standard. Last nine hundred sixty-five specimens will be produced by it, of which soixante-douze of a version of export the Fw 190 A-3a , intended for the Turkey, armed only with four MG 17 and deprived of air-to-ground radio FuG 25 (“ Fu” nk' g' erät). Some derivatives will be also built on the basis of A-3, the /U2 prototype on which are tested the rocket S air-to-ground RZ 65, /U4, a reconnaissance aircraft with a camera Rb 12,5/7x9, twelve modifications and /U7, a hunter of high-altitude to the armament reduced to the only guns MG 151/20, only three produced.

In June 1942, A-4 succeeds to him, bringing a system of overpower MW 50, overfeeding the BMW 801 D-2 for short periods by Injection of water-methanol. In the same way, radio operator FuG 16 Z, working in very the high frequencies and thus, whose mast antenna is a little shorter, replaces FuG 7a preceding. A-4 sees also the appearance of the realizable kits of conversion into units R for Rüstsätze, allowing a even greater versatility, by adapting the apparatus for various missions very quickly. Fifty specimens are finished in Fw 190 A-4/Trop, equipped with filters air and necessary to survival, adapted to the desert conditions. Other alternatives of factory were also carried out, like U1, a hunter bomber with a ventral bomb thrower ETC-501, the reduced shielding and the MG dismounted FF, which was produced specifically for the SKG-10. U3 and U8, two other fighter-bombers, will be famous respectively, thereafter, Fw 190 F-1 and Fw 190 G-1. On the whole nine hundred and twenty Fw 190 A-4 will be assembled.

In November 1942, a-5 allows, by the lengthening of 13,5 cm of the engine mount, to reduce the vibrations of this one. A great number of derivatives are carried out in factory, as U2 intended for the hunting of night according to the tactics Wilde Sau (wild sow), and thus equipped with flash-concealers. Appear also first Zerstörer (destroyer), whose armament is weighed down to fight against the American four-engined planes, U7, U9 and U17, and of the more original alternatives still like U14 and U15, which thanks to bomb thrower etc 502 and with a caster of lengthened tail can carry Torpille S.

The progressive heaviness of the plane involves for the following model, A-6, a recasting of the wing which makes it possible to make fall down the wing load with 226 Kilogram S by Mètre S square. The two MG-FF are replaced by two other MG 151/20, which standardizes the armament, hitherto, the two types of guns used two different ammunition of 20 mm. The radio of air-to-air connections FuG 25 is also replaced by FuG 25a, and in the course of series FuG 16 Z, it definitively yields the place to FuG 16 ZE with its characteristic circular antenna. Conversions carried out into factory of A-6, are reduced to two, a-6-Bo fighter-bombers, with a bomb thrower etc 501 pennies the fuselage and four etc 50 pennies the wings, and the hunters of night A-6-N equipped with FuG 217. But n the other hand, the kits of conversion into Rüstsätze units are privileged, because more flexible, in particular for the Front of the East. The Fw 190 A-6 , with more than three thousand specimens will be the most produced version variations of Focke-Wulf.

In December 1943, A-7 sees the replacement of the machine-guns of cap by Rheinmetall-Borsig MG 131 of 13 mm and FuG 16 ZE by a ZY. Moreover, one collimator with reflection Revi 16 is assembled to facilitate the shootings with deflection. After about four hundred specimens, the production passes to A8 which is different from it by carrying from a small tank from 115 liters, placed behind the principal ones, containing with the choice, of the additional mixture for overpower MW 50 or of the normal fuel. It constitutes with more 2  000 planes, the last version of hunting produced in quantity. A9 which follows it with its engine BMW 801 E, arrives too late and only to a few exemplary hundreds as from September 1944 can indeed be built.

Hunters of high-altitude

Fw 190 is a remarkable hunter, which made from the start proof of its superiority vis-a-vis its British rival the Spitfire at low and average altitudes. However its engine is not provided that of a compressing rather simple, with a stage and two speeds, which prevents the plane from being powerful in altitude, the engine output falling rather quickly with the tops of five thousand Mètre S. the research department of Tank seeks rather quickly, parallel to the production and the evolution of Fw 190A, to develop a version for high-altitude, during several successive programs.

At the beginning of 1942, the program Höhenjäger 1 (hunter of high-altitude 1) is launched, it gives rise to the Fw 190 B , through modifications made on two Fw 190 A-0, Fw 190 V13 and V16. The first tests, relate to the assembly of a system of overpower GM 1, which functions by nitric injection of oxide, which gives good performances even to the top of 7  500 meters, but for a limited time (approximately 17 minutes), because the increase in size of the nitric oxide tank, would be too prejudicial with the behavior of the plane. One then thinks of equipping, the plane of a version Turbo compressed BMW 801 and of a wing surface increased to 20,3 square meters. But soon the BMW factory announces that it is in impossibility of delivering the engine within the time limits, one thus assembles Daimler-Benz dB 603 A-0, on V13 and V16, thereafter V16 receives even a dB 603 E, August 1942, with which it is able to fly to the top of 10.000 meters during more than two hours. But the RLM is not satisfied yet and requires to reach altitudes of about 14.000 meters in a prolonged way. The few specimens carried out thereafter are motorized by the couple BMW 801 D2 and GM 1, on the other hand they try out the first pressurized cabins, which still suffer from an absence of sealing. In November 1942, Focke-Wulf and the RLM, decides to defer the effort on Fw 190 C and to give up any later development on Fw 190 B.

For this one V13 is again remotorisé with a BMW 801 C-1 actuating a four-bladed propeller, then one equips, V18 with one dB 603 turbocompressé and an increased drift. Six Fw 190 C-0, based on the configuration of V18, are produced thereafter to test various turbocompressors: two with of Hirth-Motoren 2281 and four with DVL TK-11. But, the unreliability and the high cost of the turbocompressors, cause the program stop at the end 1943.

Beside these two failures, Focke-Wulf also works on another Fw 190 A-0, V17, which were modified to him to accept an engine of 12 cylinders out of V, the Jumo 213 has. It steals in March 1942 and, thereafter five cells of Fw 190 A-8, are also modified. Good performances are reached without falling into through preceding tests, a preproduction, D-0 is launched and after some modifications on the power plant and the empennage, a series, Fw 190 D-9 is launched in June 1944. It starts to be deployed within the III. /JG 54, which then protects the Messerschmitt Me 262 from the JV 44. Thereafter, it is also deployed in many units of Luftwaffe and appears a very dangerous adversary for all the combined planes, although it is regarded by German only as one apparatus of transition towards the Focke-Wulf Your 152.

Fighter-bombers, " Jagdbomber" and " Schlachtflieger"

Very quickly, Fw 190 has, will be adapted for an employment as fighter-bomber. Since the first conversions of Bf 109 in this role during the year 1940, each squadron of German hunting (Jagdgeschwader), formed a tenth flotilla of fighter-bombers (Jagdbomberstaffel), and as of Fw 190 A-2, an alternative of hunting bombardment, the Fw 190 A-2/U3 is created and starts to equip the 10. (Jabo) /JG 26, based with Holy Omer, as from June 1942. The /U3 modification, consists in the assembly of a bomb thrower etc 501, able to carry a bomb of 500 kg, that is to say four of 50 with an adapter, the application of a shielding protecting the lower part from the engine, and the disassembling of guns MG-FF to save weight.

Fw 190 A-3 does not seem to have profited from a similar modification, but A-4, sees it reappearing, as well as an alternative, said Jabo-Rei intended more particularly for the raids of penetration, in particular above the England. This Fw 190 A-4/U8 , sees its armament only fixes reduced to the MG 151/20, it carries also an etc 501 pennies the fuselage, but also two points of carrying borrowed from the Ju 87 which allow the assembly of a releasable reserve of three hundred liters fuel under each wing, the mass on takeoff being then higher than four tons and half. Thereafter, the two modifications will be reclassified respectively, Fw 190 F-1 and Fw 190 G-1 .

Fw 190 A-5 has to him also its /U3 and /U8, which will become Fw 190 F-2 and G-2. Its U17 alternative becomes it, the Fw 190 F-3 Panzerblitz which profit from a canopy convex to improve the visibility of the pilot and two Rüstsätze ( kits ), the carrying of four additional bomb throwers etc 50, R1, or the assembly of two guns MK 103 out of nacelle under the wings, R3. It is followed by F-8, is based him on a cell of Fw 190 A-8, in February 1944, which profits from many derivatives of which in particular bombers Torpille the USSR, then by F-9, is based on A-9 and thus motorized by a BMW 801 E. The ultimate version, Fw 190 F-15 will be produced with some specimens as from February 1945. This series F is used to replace the Junkers Ju 87 for the fire support of the troops on the ground. The old squadrons of bombers in piqué (Sturzkampfgeschwader) are transformed into squadrons of battle (SchlachtGeschwader). To facilitate the conversion of the pilots accustomed to slow the Stuka, to these machines not very different from the hunters, some two-seater specimens are even carried out, Fw 190 A-8/U1 which will thereafter be renamed Fw 190S-8 (the “S” meant “Schulflugzeug”, “German Avion-école” in ).

In parallel, the production and the evolution of the series G, continue, with the appearance of G-3 or Fw 190 A-5/U13 , equipped with a radio compass PKS 11/12 Kurssteuerung, and with a mass on the takeoff of 4795 kg. It tries out carrying and the dropping of a bomb of 1,8 tons and a version of night, Fw 190 G-3/N, is produced and used by the 51e squadron of bombers (Kampfgeschwader) and the 20th group of attack of night (Nachtschlachtgruppe). G-4 will be only one modernization of G-1, with the radio compass of G3. G-5, motorized by a BMW 801 E, and envisaged with the production in March 1945, will not be finally produced, like its derivative G-6, G-7 will not be him not even projected. On the other hand G-8, derived from A-8, will be Fw 190 G, more produced with eight hundred specimens.

Fw 190 French

With the end of the year 1944, after the withdrawal of the Wehrmacht, an underground factory was discovered with Cravant, several tens of Fw 190 A-5 and A-7, in the course of manufacture, had been abandoned there. To equip the reappearing air force, the state integrated this factory within the Aeronautical manufacturer of the Center and decided to complete the construction of a hundred of these planes under the name of NC 900 . The motivation was economic, each NC 900, totaled 1,5 franc million of the time instead of 12 for the purchase of a British Spitfire. The completion of the fuselages and the aerofoils did not pose major problems, On the other hand, the engines BMW 801 D2 had been sabotaged in a way so perfect that the manufacturer Voisin, responsible for their repair, had the greatest evil required functional specimens. The plane was brought into service within the flotilla Normandy Niémen as from February 1946, but the many breakdowns of engines involved the grounding, mid-April and their reinforcement.

Operational employment

The deliveries started with the II. /JG 26, in Belgium, in July 1941, and the plane have its baptism of fire on September 1st 1941, during which a Schwarm (patrol) of 4 Fw 190 of the II. /JG 26 allocated 3 Spitfire S without undergoing loss. First shot down Fw 190 was that of the Gruppenkommandeur Walter Adolf, Chef of the II. /JG 26, holder of 29 victories gained at the time of an exit against Bristol Blenheim of R.A.F, the September 18th, above Ostend. Their first action of great scale was the cover of the passage of the Manche by the cruisers of battle Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, in February 1942. Called Anton by the pilots, the plane in spite of his weak armament and the unreliability of its engine, appears already a frightening adversary, it is from the start superior to the Spitfire Mk.V. RAF initially believed to have to make with a version improved of the Bloch MB.150 or Curtiss H.75, once it had become aware of the threat, a raid of commandos, was planned to capture the plane: the operation " Airthief". The landing by error of the Oberleutnant Armin Faber on board its A-3 in England made cancel the operation, but the evaluation of the apparatus worried the British. The Spitfire Mk.IX carried all the hopes, at the time of the Débarquement of Dieppe, in August 1942, during which the staff thought well of leading Focke-Wulf to fight. The result was disappointing, Mk.IX seemed to equalize Fw 190 has, but Mk.V was completely dominated, as Josef Wurmheller proved it, which descended seven in the course of the day from there on board its A-3. A-4 series arrived at the end of the year, marked the beginning of the use of the plane on the face of the East. The October 31st, a raid of 30 Fw 190 has, was caught some at the English city of Canterbury, in reprisals of the raids of the Bomber Command.

The year 1943, saw the appearance of a new threat with the massive raids of day of the American bombers, whose solidity and the important defensive armament first of all took the German pilots of short, the tactics of usual attack, by the back, appeared increasingly dangerous and less and less effective. The parade emerged soon by frontal master keys in formation against the waves of bombers, the four guns of Focke-Wulf appeared fatal with this play, so that after the failure and the losses of the raids on Schweinfurt and Regensburg, the October 14th, USAF had to give up the not escorted raids and to await the arrival of hunters with long operating range like the P-51 Mustang, to begin again its strike in the middle of the Germany. However the frontal master keys required pilots experienced to carry out them, because of high speeds of approach. When the Luftwaffe, missed those, one had to again employ tactics of approach by the back, with surblindés planes, surarmés, heavy and incompetents to defend oneself against the unfavourable hunters. Fw 190 nevertheless was always respected by the pilots of bombers, as proves it the following anecdote: Boeing sent an advertizing plate where Fw 190 appeared and " captions it; Who' S Afraid Off The Big Bad Wulf? " (which is afraid of the large malicious wolf), publicity to him was returned, annotated " We are." (let us be we it) and signed by all the unit. Focke-Wulf were specialized most of the time at that time in the destruction of the bombers, they were then covered by Messerschmitt Bf 109 which tried to protect them from many and aggressive American hunters.

Another task which Fw 190 fills has, was the destruction of the British bombers of night, according to the tactics known as " Wilde Sau" (wild sow). The pilot was during this kind of mission delivered to him even, its apparatus was a hunter of day only modified by the assembly of flash-concealers on the exhaust and the weapons. It moved towards a bombarded zone, flying low than the British and sought to locate the bombers thanks to the light of the fires and of the projectors, it could consequently join them by in lower part and attack them. This tactic was developed and was mainly improved by major Hajo Hermann. It was very useful and perhaps only when the British employed metal spangles ( Chaffs ) for to scramble the German radars. Nevertheless the losses were numerous, because of need for flying night, often by bad weather, on an aircraft not equipped for that.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was the apparatus many ace of the Luftwaffe, Otto Kittel with 220 victories over A-4 and a-5, is the best on the plane, but Walter Nowotny, Heinz Bär, Hermann Graf and Kurt Bühligen obtained many successes on the apparatus. In the same way, the pilots of the Schlachtgruppe, although their role is mainly the attack on the ground, appeared on several occasions of frightening combatants, their Fw 190 F, allowed to attenuate a little the shortage of hunters from which the Luftwaffe suffered on the Front from the East, at the end of the war.

Summary of the alternatives

Of a great versatility, especially because of its extremely modular construction, Focke-Wulf Fw 190 knew very many derivatives, intended to fill of the very diverse missions. At the beginning, the planes all were indicated Fw 190 has, alone Fw 190 B, C and D indicating the successive alternatives coexisted with the principal series. These models was declined in successive versions progressively of their progressive improvement, noted by figures, thus A-4 was the fourth version of model A. the made modifications machines some (U for Umrüst-Bausatz = kit of modification) and assemble in the workshops of the face (R for complementary Rüstsatz = kit), then changed the plane to fill of more specialized missions. In 1944, to simplify, the naming of the alternatives, four new principal designations were created, Fw 190 E for the conversions intended for the recognition derived from the /U4 kits, Fw 190 F for the planes of support on the ground derived from the kits machines /U3 and Fw 190 G for the fighter-bombers with long operating range derived from the kit /U8. It is however advisable to be careful with any catalog of the versions of Fw 190, because the various modifications are numerous and sometimes of detail; sometimes several are applied to the same plane, and one often belongs to many contradictions according to the sources.
