Flying Tigers (flotilla)

the flying Tigers (or Flying Tigers ) is the nickname given to a group of American voluntary mercenaries based in China during the Second world war. Their history is told in propaganda film the flying Tigers carried out by David Miller in 1942 with John Wayne. It is also referred to the flying Tigers in the pilot of the series the burned Heads .
Created by Claire Chennault at the end of the summer 1941, the squadron is a AVG (American Volunteer Group) equipped with fighter plans Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. It will count approximately 90 fighter plans.
Their nickname comes from the painting carried out for the first time by Eric Shilling, one of the pilots, on the nose of its plane and which represents an open mouth of Requin open. It itself is inspired by the paintings made on their Messerschmitt Bf 110 by the pilots of Haifischgruppe (“Group of the Sharks”, makes the II/ZG 76 of them) Luftwaffe.
This flotilla counted in its rows Gregory Boyington.
The unit will become officially in the American army the 23e Groupe of Hunting of the 14th USAAF in the month of March 1943 whose badge keeps a trace of its origins.
