The movement Fluxus is a movement of contemporary art born in the the Sixties which touched mainly the visual Arts but also the Musique and the Littérature.
At the end of the the Fifties, young artists, influenced by Hobby-horse, the teaching of John Cage and by philosophy Zen, carried out a meticulous sabotage of the categories of the Art by a systematic rejection of the institutions and concept of work of art. (The word " fluxus" comes from the medical field where it indicates the processes of " defecation coulante" or of " emptying of body coulant" ).
The personality of Georges Maciunas emerges soon from this group: it is him which chooses the name Fluxus in 1961 and which writes the Fluxus Proclamation. It creates a gallery in 1961 and organizes concerts of Modern music, as well as exposures of his friends (John Cage, Dick Higgins or Assembles It Young) before settling in Germany. In September 1962, it organizes the first concert Fluxus , the Fluxus Internationale Festspiele neuester Musik , which marks the true beginnings of the movement. Soon tens of artists of the five continents join and find it in this merry practice and Iconoclaste, the space of freedom which they sought.
During twenty years, in spite of the scissions and exclusions, Fluxus will remain faithful to its Utopie starting: by a Humor devastator and provocant, to literally explode limits of the artistic practice, to abolish the borders between the Art S and to build a final bond between art and the life.
If Fluxus counted among its members of as prestigious and varied personalities as Dick Higgins, Wolf Vostell, Henry Flynt, Nam June Paik, Robert Filliou, Benjamin Vautier (known as Ben), Ben Patterson, Jean Dupuy, Daniel Spoerri, Vytautas Landsbergis (former president of the République of Lithuania of 1990 with 1992) or Yoko Ono, it were not satisfied to limit its existence to the books of Histoire S and its practice, nourished of a major reflection and always of topicality, fact proof of an unceasingly renewed energy. Fluxus rewrites with each concert its own history and marked certainly of its influence the contemporary practices.
