Flow chart (organization)

See also: Flow chart

The flow chart is a diagrammatic representation of the bonds functional, organisational and hierarchical of an organization, a program, etc It must have a documentary reference.

It can be carried out in various forms, most traditional being the Râteau.

It is used to indicate the distribution of the persons in charge of units as tasks between the stations, and relations of command who exist between them. It gives only little information with regard to the allocation of the functions, which are described in definitions of function (these definitions of function are attached to the flow chart by a documentary reference with revision). It makes it possible to represent the relations of command (as well as the statutes, tallies, comparable frameworks, oetam,…) reports/ratios of subordination. The management positions and of execution are represented by rectangles and the stations of staffs by ovals, for example (see the standard of representation of the logigrammes with its codes of forms).

One should not confuse the flow chart with the neologisms used in data processing which are the Ordinogramme or the Algorigramme.

Various types of flow charts

  • technical Flow chart of product (OTP)
  • Programming flowchart
  • Flow chart of data
  • Flow chart of configuration
It is a neologism which was created to indicate a graph representing a complex organization (industrial company, state education, college…). The flow chart is used to visualize the organization. It is also used to share the same vision of the organization of the tasks within a program. In short the flow chart specifies which does what. It is the project which requires the development of a flow chart, in order to allot to each one its functions. It thus translates the statutes and the roles of each employee and determines the responsibilities for each one. To conclude a project, that requires a team work, where the tasks of each one are specified. The originator of a flow chart is never the executant.

Creation of flow charts

A certain number of software are available to create flow charts. Microsoft Visio, Microsoft PowerPoint and OrgPlus are frequently used. There exist also products created by companies like Ingentis, HumanConcepts, Cezanne Software and PeopleBoard which make it possible to create flow charts while being connected has SAP, PeopleSoft or the systems Oracle ERP.
