Florianópolis
Florianópolis is a city Brésil ienne, capital of the State of Santa Catarina since 1823, located on the island of Santa Catarina.
History

Inhabited before the Colonization by the Indian Tupi-Guarani, then by some deserters of maritime forwardings, the city was founded towards 1675 by Francisco Dias Velho, under the name of Nossa Senhora C Desterro (literally “Notre-Dame of the French Exile”, allusion to the holy owner of the locality), thus initiating the occupation of the island.
It was only starting from 1747 that Florianópolis knew its first important wave of Immigration. Between 1747 and 1756, approximately: 5000 Portuguese originating in the archipelago of the the Azores were installed on the island and the littoral of the State.
Second half of the 18th century until the end of 19th, the city took an active part in hunting for the Baleine.
The name of Florianópolis was given to him in 1894 in homage to the marshal Floriano Peixoto.
Other names of the city
The first name given to the city was “Meiembipe”, name given by the Indians Carijós who lived there before European colonization. With the arrival of Francisco Dias Velho, a colony takes the name of “Nossa Senhora C Desterro”, or simply “Desterro”. After the defeat of the federalistic troops during the Federalistic Revolution (1893-1895), it becomes definitively “Florianópolis”, according to the name Floriano Peixoto, Head of the Brazilian State. The city is also popularly called “Floripa”.
Geography
The municipality of Florianópolis, which includes/understands a continental part and an insular part, recovers 433 km ² for a population of: 406564 inhabitants in July 2006, according to the estimates of IBGE. The major part of the population of the municipality concentrates around the Détroit separating the island from the continent, in the district of the center. The municipality gathers on the whole 12 District S. It is also the center of the metropolitan region of Florianópolis.
Demography
The urban surface of Florianópolis is consisted of the municipalities of Florianópolis, São Jose, Palhoça and Biguaçu which forms a continuous urban core. The Conurbation of these four municipalities gathers: 794204 inhabitants, according to the estimates of the IBGE.
Climatic characteristics
Florianópolis shows climatic characteristics inherent in the southern littoral of the Brésil. Relief
The island of Santa Catarina has a lengthened and narrow form, with an overall length of 54 km and an average width of 18 km. Its littoral, cut out enough, present of many Handle S, point S, island S, bay S and Lac S. the island is parallel to located the continent, from which it is separated by a narrow channel. Its relief is made of discontinuous mountainous points, whose altitude varies between 400 and 532 Mr. the point highest of the island is the Morro C Ribeirão, with 532 meters of altitude. On the island of Santa Catarina, the municipality counts several localities having known to preserve their picturesque side in a style dating from the time of from the Azores colonization of the area, like Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha.
One finds there also various fortresses, built between 1740 and 1744, by the sergeant Jose da Silva Paes, which ordered the northern and southern accesses of bay located between the island and the continent.

The city comprises two principal clubs of Football, the Figueirense Futebol Clube evolving/moving in 1 {{era}} national division and the Avaí Futebol Clube, evolving/moving in 2 {{E}} national division.Florianópolis also accommodates one of the major clubs Brazilian of Volley-ball, the Cimed Florianópolis, champion of the Brésil in 2006.
