Florent III of Holland

Florent III of Holland , born with $the Hague towards 1141, died with Antioche the 1190, was count de Hollande of 1157 with 1190. It was wire of Thierry VI, count de Hollande, and of Sophie of Luxembourg.

He married Ada of Scotland, sister of the king Guillaume the Lion. The counts of Holland adopted the crawling lion of it, for their armorial bearings, as well as the first names of Ada and Guillaume.

Florent III was faithful vassal of the emperor Frederic Ier Barberousse and accompanied it during two forwardings in Italy, 1158 and of 1176 with 1178. The emperor thanked it by integrating it in the imperial nobility and by granting to him the customs duties on Geervliet, the most important commercial city of the area. In 1189, Florent accompanied Frederic Berberousse at the time of the Third crusade and was one of the chiefs. He died of disease in 1190 with Antioche, and was buried there.

He had married the August 28th 1162 Ada of Scotland, girl of Henri of Scotland, count de Northumbrie, and of Ada de Warrenne, and sister of the kings Malcolm IV of Scotland and Guillaume Ier of Scotland. They had had:

  • Florent († 1210), canon in Utrecht and Middelbourg.

  • Ada († after 1205), married in 1176 with Othon Ier, margrave de Brandenbourg.
  • Marguerite († after 1203), married in 1182 with Thierry IV, count de Clèves.
