Flood of St Lucia
The Inondation of St Lucia ( Sint-Luciavloed ) took place the December 14th 1287 in Frise and Holland. This day there, the shortly after the Holy Lucie, a violent one storm involved the rupture of the dams and the innondation caused the death from 50.000 to 80.000 people. This innondation is the fifth known in term of importance.
Many the grounds submerged at the time of this innondation are still under water today. Previously, water present in the area was comparable with those of a lake called Lac Flevo. The innondations of the Holy Lucie and the following ones made penetrate water of the the North Sea in the area which became a maritime zone. The gulf thus created at sea was named Zuiderzee as from this period. The purpose of great work of the Afsluitdijk, launched at the beginning of the XXe century, was to take again with the sea the lost grounds duramt this innondation.
