Floating Because Dated

The Floating because dated or FCD is a method to know the traffic on the highway network. It is based on the data acquisition of localization, speed, direction of the displacement of the travelling vehicles. These data are essential sources for information on the traffic and more still for the transport systems intelligent or STI. That means that any vehicle equipped with manner suitable can act like a probe for the highway network. From these data, the congestions can be identified, calculated run times and situation reports on the traffic can be generated instantaneously.

In opposition to the surveillance cameras of the traffic, the systems of recognition of number plates and with the loops of detection integrated in the roadway, no additional material on the highway network is necessary.

Various technologies are possible:

  • Floating Cellular Dated i.e. based on the cellular network (CDMA, GSM, UMTS, GPRS): No disposititif or material specific is necessary: each lit mobile phone becomes a " probe trafic" and in an anonymous way. The localistaion of the mobile phone is determined by Triangulation or the intercellular transfer stored by the operator of the network. As the localization is less precise than with the systems of positioning per satellite (GPS), much of devices must be tracked and of the complex algorithms used to extract a data from Cependant high-quality, more there is traffic, more there is of car, more there of mobile phones thus more there are data thus of precision on total information obtained. In the urban areas where information on the traffic is most necessary the distance between the less large reception antennas, the precision of the collected data increases.

The FCD based on mobile phone thus seems to have additional advantages on the GPS or other systems more conventional like the surveillance cameras of traffic or the sensors drowned in the roadway:

* no infrastructure or additional material, neither in the cars nor on the roads, therefore cheaper,
* an extensive cover of the highway network particularly in urban areas
* simplicity of implementation, without immobilization of part of the roads due to building sites
* less maintenance.

  • GPS: Even if the system is democratized, for the moment only a reduced number of vehicle are equipped with GPS, even more than one GPS communicating with the service provider (mainly fleets of vehicles of transport or taxi). The data of positioning are communiquézs by radio operator or more expensive system by the mobile telephone network.

Technically, the FCD can be used like a monitoring system, as the companies deploying of systems FCD must give insurances as all the data are anonymous in their computing systems and protected sufficiently well to avoid any abusive use.
