Floated wood

The floated wood is Bois which was drossé on the coast (oceanic or of all other stretch of water) by the action of the wind, the currents or the tides.

On certain coasts, floated wood constitutes an important harmful effect however it takes part in the biotope, providing shelter or food to the marine birds, fish or other species watery when it floats or when it is failed on the coast. The Limnoriidae S, the tarets and the Bactérie S break up this wood, gradually transforming it into nutrients which are reintroduced in the Food chain. When this wood, partially broken up and dug, is rejected at the coast, it can be used as shelters with the birds or other species and allow the growth of certain plants. In certain cases, it can be used as foundations for the creation of dunes sand.

Floated wood can come from:

  • tree or connects tree rejected into the ocean (or very other important stretch of water) carted by the rivers or snatches by the winds, the storms or the floods.
  • elements of buildings or houses, destroyed during floods, storms or tsunamis.
  • objects out of wooden carried by the sea since the coast or the beach.
  • remainders of wrecks of boats out of wooden.
  • pallets, cases or Bark S lost by the cargo liners.

In the history

According to the Scandinavian Mythology, the first human beings, Ask and Embla were created starting from two pieces of wood floated, a Frêne and a Orme, by the god Odin and his brothers, Vé and Vili.

The floated wood carted by the Arctic rivers was a long time the principal one and sometimes the only resource wood of the Inuit S and other populations of the Arctique which lived beyond the Limite of the trees.

In many maritime areas, floated wood was used for the Séchoir S with fish.

One of the most famous pieces of wood floated is the Old Man off the Lake in the lake of the Crater in Oregon (the United States). The trunk of this tree floats vertically in the lake since more than one century. Thanks to cool water of the lake, the tree was preserved.

Floated wood sculptures

Floated wood is frequently used as elements decorative or artistic. Floated wood sculptures were built on beaches or mudholes.
  • One of most known is with Kullaberg in Sweden, where Lars Vilks created Nimis, a work out of floated wooden discussed in 1980.
  • Of the sculptures were created in the mudholes of Emeryville in California and in the Baie of San Francisco at the end of the years 1960.
