Flight 77 American Airlines

The flight 77 American Airlines of the September 11th, 2001 carried out, by a Boeing 757 -223, the connection between Washington and Los Angeles (California). Having taken off the International airport of Dulles to 8:20, with ten minutes of delay, it left its road to 8:46 and became radio-dumb man with 8:50 according to the Kean Commission. According to NTSB, the last radio transmission took place with 8:51 and the first anomaly of flight was noted with 8:55. It had its transponder cut to 8:56 and struck with 9:37 the Western wing of the Pentagone at the speed of 850 km/h. The 53 passengers, the 6 team members and the 5 terrorists perished, like 125 people in the building.

The crash landing

Detected near the Dulles airport, to the west of Washington, the plane moved right on the protected area including the White House, the Capitole and the Pentagone. Air control warned the Presidency (in fact the Cheney vice-president, Georges Bush being then in Florida) approach of this unknown aircraft. Dick Cheney took refuge in the PEOC (emergency Operational center of the Presidency), a bunker arranged in basement, and the majority of the personnel evacuating the building. With 9:20, the vice-president was joined by Norman Mineta, Minister for transport. A young assistant regularly held the informed vice-president of the approach of the unknown plane. Whereas this one was brought back only 15 away km, Dick Cheney answered this collaborator who worried some that " the orders remained unchanged ". Shortly after impact of the plane, around 8:58, Dick Cheney have a conversation with Georges Bush, in flight towards Louisiana, and the decision to authorize hunting to cut down the diverted civil flights was made. During his hearing, the same day as Mineta, before the Kean Commission, the Arnold general confirmed that the NORAD had not received this order before 10:00. Donald Rumsfeld, the Minister for defense, in station with the Pentagon (but in the wing, vis-a-vis Potomac), stated not to be informed attacks against the twin towers that with 9:22 - is 36 minutes after the first impact - and at all as regards the diversion of the flight AA77.
By approaching the urban center, the plane had engaged in a dive in gimlet of more than two thousand meters ending in a hedge hopping of several hundreds of meters. After having achieved this loop, the plane had struck the only sector of the complex which was not operational, in front of being delivered the following day after completion of renovation works intended to reinforce of it the structure against the terrorist attacks.
