Flight 1248 Southwest Airlines

The Vol 1248 Southwest Airlines is a scheduled flight between the International airport of Washington-Baltimore and the Aéroport of Midway to Chicago.

Accident of December 8th, 2005

December 8th, 2005, a Boeing 737 of the Southwest Airlines is damaged in end of track to the airport of Chicago-Midway. After having crossed the airport fences, the apparatus finishes its race with the intersection of Exchange Which occurred and the 55e Avenue of the south-western districts of Chicago (Illinois - E. - U.) striking two vehicles then and making 13 wounded and a death, a 6 year old older child and passenger of the one of the two cars.

The apparatus

The plane implied in the accident was a Boeing 737-700 registered N471WN which was delivered to the company low-cost American in July 2004. It had undergoes a maintenance action the day before with Phoenix (Arizona - E. - U.). It had on its board 98 passengers and 5 team members who left all unscathed the accident.

Circumstances

The flight 1248 ensured the connection between Baltimore and Chicago, and was to then continue its flight towards Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Several minor facts First of all disturbed the vol., the takeoff, initially envisaged with 14:55 in local time, was delayed with 16:50 because of the bad weather conditions. Arrived in approach of Chicago, the Boeing 737 was obliged to turn 35 minutes above the Aéroport of Midway before being able to be posed with 19:15, always because of time: a snowstorm swept the city and a layer of 18cm of snow had accumulated on the tarmac airport. According to the President of the Southwest Airlines, the visibility at the time of the landing was only of one quarter to a half mile (between 400 and 800m).

The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) decided to launch an investigation to determine the causes of the accident. The Aéroport of Midway was closed a few hours before reopening the December 9th with 6:00.
