History
Fleury-on-flowering ash had as a name Alemannia then Germany until in 1916 because of the garrison of Alamans appointed at the time of the Bas-Empire with the guard of the ford which crossed the Orne. The August 23rd 1916, the Municipal council decided in memory Fleury-in front of-Douaumont, village of the Meuse shaven this same year at the time of a battle of the First World War, to change the name of Germany into that of Fleury-on-Flowering ash.
The massacre of the ford of Athis
In 1047, William the Conqueror helped by Henri I {{er}}, king de France, put an end to the revolt Norman barons with the Bataille of the Valley-be-Dunes, close to the villages of Chicheboville, Secqueville and Bourguébus. Little information reached us on this battle, but it would seem that there was neither infantry nor archers, only groups of riders would have clashed in a disordered way.At the conclusion of these scuffles, the rebellious barons fled. They tried to cross the Flowering ash with the ford of Athis close to Fleury-on-Flowering ash and were decimated there. Carried in great number by the current, the bodies of the massacred knights blocked the mill of Bourbillon on the level of current Magic Ile. Guillaume then became the uncontested Master of the duchy of Normandy.
Careers
At the 11th century, the square of Germany was one of the principal places of extraction of the Pierre of Caen. The exploitation was done then with open sky. It was used for construction of many buildings in Normandy (ex: abbeys of Caen) or in England (ex: Turn of London).Initially, the exploitation was done starting from bowels with hillside. Then as from the 14th century, one exploited the underground careers; one dug more deeply thanks to wells dug in the east of the road of Harcourt towards the Grace of God.
During the Second world war, the inhabitants of the Caen-native agglomeration found refuge in these underground careers during the bombardments. The activity of the careers exploiting the stone of Caen ceased at the end of the years 1950, after the Reconstruction of Caen, the concrete being then the material more used in the construction industry.
Today these careers are closed with the safe public for the days of the inheritance. Some are used for the culture of the Cultivated mushroom. For more information, in particular photographic, to see the site of Lithothèque of Normandy.
