Fleischer Studios

Fleischer Studios was a company of American Animation whose seat was located at New York. It was created in 1921 by the brothers Dave and max Fleischer which remained at its head until in 1942.

Max Fleischer was the inventor of the Rotoscope, a technique which made it possible to animate characters in a realistic way and with lower costs. In 1919, the Fleischer brothers used the rotoscope to carry out the series Out off the Inkwell , with Koko the clown, for the account of Bray Studios. The series was such a success that the brothers decided to create their own studio in 1921.

In the Years 1920, Fleischer Studios was quickly made a technical reputation of excellence and creativity. The studio produced films illustrating of the songs, educational films on subject such as relativity, and a dozen sound films before even the exit of the Chanteur of Jazz .

When the sound films became the standard at the end of the Twenties, Fleischer Studios was one of the rare companies of animation to succeed in adapting. They launched the series Talkartoons whose hero was a new character called Bimbo which was well quickly made steal the high-speed motorboat by a supporting character, called a Betty Boop. Betty Boop was the first female character to profit from his own series of cartoons to the the United States. The success of the studio was confirmed when the Fleischer brothers adapted the comic-strip Popeye the sailorman . The series known a sharp success and gave even place to three feature-length films.

It is in the Années 1930 that the things were spoiled for Fleischer Studios. The adoption of the Code Hays by Hollywood pushed them with Autocensurer. The character of Betty Boop was asexual and lost most of his charm. Worse, yielding under the pressure of their distributer, Paramount Pictures, the Fleischer brothers tried to imitate the style Walt Disney what made lose with their productions their originality. The result of their efforts was the series of the Color Classics which was only one pale copy of the Silly Symphonies of Disney. The competition with Disney was pushed with its roof when the studios carried out two supposed full-length films to compete with films of the company of Burbank. Realized by a team mainly made up of organizers inexperienced and badly sold by Paramount, Gulliver' S Travels and Mr. Bug Goes To Town were far from obtaining the results anticipated by Fleischer. At the time, the best series of the company was Superman , adapted comic-book of the same name. It profited from a budget record and marked the return of the studio to the style which had made its success: a particularly neat animation, subjects more adult and more urban than its competitors.

The success of Superman will however not make it possible the studio to cleanse its accounts. In 1942, the Fleischer brothers who mortgaged the studio with Paramount are thanked. Paramount takes again the company in hand and Famous Studio renames it.
