Flavius Rufinus

Flavius Rufinus , sometimes called Rufin (born in 335 - died the November 27th 395) was Préfet of the court of the East and favorite of Arcadius into 394.

Aquitanian of Eauze, in Novempopulanie, of obscure birth, it is described like covetous, cheating and ambitious, but also intelligent, endowed with imposing presence and eloquence and dedicated catholic, which rained with the emperor Théodose I {{er}}. After the death of this last, it was binding on his Arcadius son.

In spring 395, the Visigoths of Alaric being rejected of Constantinople towards Thessalie, it decided to confine these hordes in Illyrie Eastern in order to block the claims of its enemy Stilicon on this territory which it asserted in favor of the Western Empire. The operation succeeds and Stilicon turned over to Italy.

But its triumph was of short duration because Eutrope replaced it little by little in the regard of Arcadius.

Rufin wanted to make marry his/her daughter with the emperor. However, whereas he travelled in Syria in April 395, Eutrope married quickly Arcadius with Eudoxie. November 27th, it went with Arcadius to the camp of Hebdomon for a solemn reception of the pointed out troops of Thessalie. But those directed by the goth Sheathed, friend of Stilicon, surrounded it and assassinated it.
