Flank profile
The apophysis flank profile or process flank profile is the apophysis of the Axis located at the upper part of the body and giving articulation to the atlas. It has a collar, zone of constriction at the place where it joined the body of C2.
on its former surface is an articular facet for the former arc of the atlas.
on its posterior face is a furrow for the transverse ligament of the atlas, which retains it in place.
The apex is pointed and gives attachment to the apical ligament of the flank profile. That Ci sticks to the clivus occipital aos.
The internal structure of the flank profile is more compact than that of the vertebral body.

Type I fractures point of the flank profile, is a rare and stable fracture.

Type II is a fracture of the collar of the flank profile, it is an unstable fracture.

Type III is a fracture which extends in the vertebral body from the atlas.
