Flag of the Upper Volta

The Drapeau of the the Upper Volta was composed of three horizontal bands Noir, Blanc and Rouge.

Those represent the three affluents of the river Volta which irrigates the country, the Volta Noire, the white Volta and the red Volta.

It was adopted at the time of independence in August 1960 and was preserved until August 1984, when the Upper Volta became the Burkina-Faso.

It resembles the flag of the German Empire used of 1870 to 1918, from which only the size differentiates it.
