Flag of Ontario

Current the flag of Ontario was proclaimed the official flag of the Canadian province of the Ontario by the Loi on the official flag the May 21st 1965. The flag is a British Red Ensign, with the Union Jack in the canton and the ecu of the Armoiries of Ontario in the leaf.

Before 1965, the Red Ensign Canadian had floated on the governmental legislature and buildings. This year, the federal government, after a long and acrimoniously debate, decides to replace Red Ensign with current the Drapeau of Canada. This decision was extremely unpopular near the rural Ontarians, which formed the political base of the Parti progressist-conservative the Prime Minister John Robarts.

Robarts proposed thus that Ontario has its own flag and than it would be Red Ensign like the old Canadian flag. The only difference was that the ecu would be that of the Ontarian armorial bearings, replacing that of the Canadian armorial bearings. Although Robarts insisted that it supported the adoption of the new national flag, it believed that Red Ensign was an important symbol which reflected the British heritage of Ontario as well as the sacrifices of the Canadian soldiers under Red Ensign.

The Canadians were exhausted after the long debate on the national flag, and the chiefs of the Liberal party of Ontario as of the Nouveau Democratic party of Ontario chose to support the flag. The single opposition came from the Député liberal Elmer Sopha, which was completely opposed to the flag, asserting that it did not reflect the diversified character of Ontario and which it was about a " flag of vengeance" against the new national flag. However, only another deputy joint with him to vote against the flag, the liberal Leo Troy, and the flag was adopted by the legislative Parliament the March 17th.
