Flag of Libya

The flag of Libya consists of a simple bottom Vert. It is the only flag in the world having only one color and not presenting any reason. The green is the color of the Islam and that of the “revolution of the people” of Mouammar Kadhafi.

History

Kingdom of Libya, 1951-1969

The first flag of the Libya was adopted at the time of the Indépendance vis-a-vis the Italy the December 21st 1951 in all the country. The flag was already used in Tripolitaine since the March 8th and in Cyrénaïque since December 1950.

It derives from the flag of Cyrénaïque, whose Idris was Emir. Black with crescent and star, it was inspired by that of the Ottoman Empire (to which the Libyan territory until the October 18th 1912 belonged, where it was yielded to the Italy). The bands red and green were added to represent the Fezzan and Tripolitaine.

At that time, Libya is a monarchy directed by Idris Al-Mahdi. This flag is today symbol of the adverse monarchists with Kadhafi.

Libyan Arab republic, 1969-1972

September 1st 1969, Kadhafi seizes the power. Libya, which becomes the Libyan Arab republic, adopts a flag with the Couleurs panarabes.

the Union of the Arab Republics, 1972-1977

Of 1972 with 1977, Libya adds a Faucon of gold (known as " of Quraych ") in the center, seizing with these claws a ribbon with writing Union of the Arab Republics (Arab اتحادالجمهورياتالعربية, ittiħād Al-jumhūriyyāt Al “arabiyya ). The flag is the same one as that of the Egypt and the Syria (of 1971 with 1980). It was not distinguished from both other than by a small cartouche under the falcon with the name of the State: Arab republic of Libya.

Kadhafi indeed tried into practice to put around Libya the principles Panarabisme. Although approved by referendum in the three countries in March 1972, the Union of the Arab Republics was born never really because of a dissension under the precise conditions of fusion. It separated officially in March 1977.

It should not be confused with the United Arab Republic (1958-1961) which was a union more substantivizes between Egypt and Syria.

Current flag

The November 19th 1977, the voyage of the president Anouar el-Sadate in Israel is seen by Kadhafi like a treason. It then gives up its flag similar to that of Egypt and adopts a flag uniformly green the Libyan Arab republic becomes in same time the Arab Jamahiriya popular Libyan woman and Socialist.

It thus symbolizes all at the same time the green revolution (fight against malnutrition in a socialist spirit) and the attachment with the Islamic religious tradition.
