The flabiol is a slightly conical Flûte 25 cm length. He is played of the left hand, the line being occupied with small a Tambour called “tambori”, and comprises eight or nine holes. Five only are used, three tops, and two lower parts, the others being holes of agreement.

The flabiol covers two octave S. It belongs to the family of the recorders, and more particularly to the family of the “Flutes and drums” with a hand, like the Galoubet of Provence, and the Basque Txistu , but which them is played on three holes only. It has a strong and strident sound which enables him to continue in the open air.

The flabiol is a very characteristic instrument in the Cobla, especially by its intervention in the entries and the counterpoints of the Sardane; intervention which occurred already at times of the “contrepas” and the “short sardane”, and now, in the current sardane, jointly with the tambourine.
