Fjarðabyggð

Fjarðabyggð is a commune (in Icelandic sveitarfélag ) of Iceland, cash 3.907 inhabitants at December 31st, 2005.

The commune, located at the east of the country in the Austurland was created on June 7th, 1998 during fusion of Neskaupstaður, Eskifjarðarkaupstaður and Reyðarfjarðarhreppur.

It was decided on October 8th, 2005 to amalgamate the communes of Fjarðabyggð, Mjóafjarðarhreppur, Austurbyggð and Fáskrúðsfjarðarhreppur in a new commune of the name of Fjarðabyggð. This decision took effect on June 9th, 2006.
