Fives

Fives is popular quarters of the east of Lille approximately cash 19.000 inhabitants and suffering of an important unemployment rate (approximately 25  % ). Fives pains to be reconverted. An underground line crosses the district, which remains primarily residential.

History

In 1066 Fives belonged to the Châtellenie of Lille and forms an independent parish with Fâches (Annoy-Fives).

Towards 1130 a Prieuré is founded, the monks receive beforehand cleared grounds.

Towards 1200 Fives becomes an independent parish.

In 1485, 1491 and 1498 Fives is set fire to by three times by the French.

At the 16th century Philippe II, king of Spain, authorizes the construction of a channel of Lille towards Fives to evacuate the water polluted towards the Marque.

In 1579 " Gueux" , in favor of the independence of the Netherlands plunder Fives. The war of independence of the Netherlands makes rage, North (current Netherlands) becomes independent in 1640 while the South (Belgium and Nord-Pas-de-Calais, called Spanish Netherlands then Austrian) remain under Spanish control. Lille becomes the capital of the Netherlands of the South.

In August 1667, Louis XIV takes the control of Lille and Fives.

Between 1815 and 1845, three spinning mills of Coton settle in Fives up to now remained rural.

In 1861, foundation of the company Fives Cail Babcock which built several thousands of engines, railway and road bridges and some stations of railroad (of which that of Orsay, current Musée of Orsay).

Fives is attached to Lille by imperial decree in 1858.

Fives thus owes its rise with the advent of the spinning mills, the metallurgy and the car. Its population was multiplied by six between 1860 and 1920 and the district accommodated great names like Peugeot, Fives Cail Babcock (which employed until 8  000 people, currently integrated in the Group Fives-Lille).

These industries were touched very hard by the industrial crisis: Peugeot, then Fives Cail closes their doors in the years 1990. The district became increasingly residential and tries from now on to be reconverted. A new central place, the place Pierre De Geyter is inaugurated in 2007.
