Five-Ports

The Five-Ports , in English Cinque Ports , indicate several ports of the southernmost coast of the England, which enjoyed certain privileges. Originally there were indeed only five of them, but their number in the continuation was changed to eight.

It is:

  1. in the County of Kent: Dover, Hythe, Romney , Sandwich;
  2. in that of the county of Sussex: Hastings, Rye, Seaford, Winchelsea.

They form a military and administrative province with share. The title of Gouverneur of the Five-Ports ( Lord Warden off the Cinque Ports ) is one of great dignities of England.
