Fishing out of expansion LNH 1967
The fishing out of expansion of the LNH of 1967 is a special fishing out of the National league of hockey. In 1967, the LNH passes from six teams to twelve teams with the addition of the following franknesses:
- North Stars of Minnesota,
- Kings of Los Angeles,
- Seals d' Oakland,
- Flyers of Philadelphia,
- Penguins de Pittsburgh,
- Blues of Saint-Louis.
Context of the fishing out
The fishing out was a great upheaval in the history of the National league of hockey. During a long moment after the Great depression and the Second world war, the leaders of the LNH obstinately refused the addition of new teams to the league which counted only six teams, known as the Six teams original of the LNH.However, in the middle of the years 1960, the fear of the other major sporting leagues which solidified their presence in the west and the desire to obtain an new agreement of remote transmission of the matches similar to those obtained by the Major League Baseball and the National Football League, came to end from resistance keen from the leaders with respect to the groups from investors who submitted proposals for franknesses to them.
As they decided as the league would double of size for the season 1967-68, passing from 6 to 12 teams, with the possibility of continuing to add teams in the future. Thus the North Stars of Minnesota, the Kings of Los Angeles, the Seals d' Oakland, the Flyers of Philadelphia, the Penguins de Pittsburgh and the Blues of Saint-Louis made their entry in the league, bringing a wind of freshness within a LNH which will be the same one never again. During years, the fans saw same the red, black and blue shirts clashing and of the day at the following day, the purple one appeared, green, orange or blue sky.
Admittedly, the expansion shocked of them more one. The Canadian were irritated to see that no new Canadian team faisse her entry in the league (even if Vancouver had deposited an offer). The main cause was that neither the Maple Leafs of Toronto nor the Canadian of Montreal wanted to share their incomes of television of CBC. The purists feared that this expansion does not dilute the talent in the league and does not cause a drop in the quality of the play of a notch - they for the majority in any event were very attached to this league with 6 teams and did not want that its format does not change. Even those favorable to the expansion worried with the idea that the league doubles its size of a blow, rather than to grow gradually (as with the Baseball for example).
The cost of a new frankness was of 2.000.000 $US, a colossal sum for the time. Each player chosen during the fishing out intra-league preceding the beginning by the activities of the new LNH cost 50.000$ and the majority of the teams were not likely any to be competitive in the immediate future. The advantage of the new league, however, was that all the new concessions were found within same Western Division especially created for the occasion (whereas the six old teams were in Division Is), which guaranteed that teams of expansion would take part in the eliminatory series and that one of it would go finally Coupe Stanley, which attracted new spectators and made the things a little more encouraging for the new clubs. The latter in addition to spending sums amazing to have new players did not collect is players from which the six original franknesses did not want any more is young players. Moreover news francize were largely outclassed by their groins and some matches were to seem quite long for new-come!
The Blues of Saint-Louis, carried out by legendary the Glenn Hall, Jacques Plants and Scotty Bowman, initially had the most success at the new teams, and was the first team of expansion to reach the final of the Stanley Cut. They made a success of in fact the exploit three years of continuation, being however swept each time finally. It will be necessary to await 1974 and the Flyers of Philadelphia before a club resulting from the expansion does not hold up prestigious Coupe Stanley.
1967 was thus the one era end for the LNH and the beginning of another. Other expansions followed (1970, 1972, 1974 for example). These expansions, the contract of Bobby Orr, the arrival of the Worldwide association of hockey, all these things changed in a radical and irreversible way the face of the league.
