Fishery Resources System Monitoring

The Fishery Resources Monitoring System , or FIRMS (in French, System of follow-up of the fishing resources ), is a partnership of organizations of intergovernmental fishings which divide a large range of information of the first quality concerning the follow-up and the management on a worldwide scale of the marine fishing resources.

Activities

  • FIRMS gathers various organizations and organizations of fishings which collaborate within the framework of a formal agreement to share information on the fishing resources and to give an account of the situation.

  • the Secretariat and the maintenance of the system belong to the regular program of FAO (United Nations for the food and agriculture).
  • It was created in February 2004 in answer to the need to ensure a durability of the fishing resources and to provide reliable, relevant and on a worldwide scale brought up to date information.
  • the System has the aim of providing to the persons in charge of the policies the most complete possible information making authority making it possible to work out policies of effective fishings in conformity with the Code of conduct for a responsible fishing set up by FAO.

This Code of conduct for a responsible fishing, adopted by the Member States of FAO on October 31st, 1995, contains a vast series of principles and methods aiming developing and at managing fishing and the aquiculture. The Code is a voluntary instrument and nonobligatory recognized like normalizes world stating the objectives of fishing and the durable aquiculture for the decades to come.

  • information available in FIRMS is based on protocols and international standards of data. It also profits from the functionalities of the world system of information on fishings (FIGIS) of FAO.
  • information is presented in the shape of information sheets synthesized and summaries of the state of the resources which contain illustrations, charts of geographical distribution, given general order in biology and the habitat, results of scientific evaluation, considerations on management and of the declarations on the situation and the tendencies.
