Fish pond-the-fat

Fish pond-the-Fat is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

Its inhabitants is called Vivarois.

Geography

The commune is located at 9 km in the south of Contrexéville by the collar of the Haut of Saline (403 m). The Gras indicates also the right affluent of the the Saone which takes its source there.

History

  • At the time of the War Thirty Year old, the Swedes, come by Alsace in 1635, besieged the village close to Saint-Baslemont and set fire to Nonville. Vivarois fled and lived more than one year in the neighbouring forests, under the rocks. In 1637, the Swedes destroyed the village before setting out again. The village was rebuilt in the valley.

  • an epidemic of plague was declared in France in 1720. The disease extended in all the district from Mirecourt and reached Viviers where one regretted of many deaths. By fear of the contagion the inhabitants of Fish ponds buried their deaths apart from the cemetery, beside the forest, this place took the name of Champ of dead the .

  • At the time of the epidemic of Cholera which devastated France in the middle of the XIXe century, one counted 32 victims with Viviers for the only year 1854.

Inheritance

; The religious heritage:
the church comprises a Romance part of the 12th century (the bell-tower) and the remainder of style blazing Gothique of the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century century. The crowned treasure was seized with the examination of year II and comprised mainly money vases. It was built in the honor of Saint Élophe, owner of the parish. Outside the church, with the top of the side door, a sundial was traced with a height of approximately 3 meters. One can notice the inscription of the date: 1687, and of the letters: P.A.R.I.M.
In 1936, the Cascaret abbot, priest of the parish, made transport two statues, coming from the court of the presbytery, on each side of the side door of the church. One, out of hard stone, represents the Virgin and dates from the 14th century; the second represents Saint Élophe, it was carved in 1600. In 1983, one deplored the disappearance of the statue of the Virgin; by security measure, one decided to install the other statue inside the church.

the vault is the counterpart of that the Top of the Rock. The first mass was celebrated on Sunday, June 3, 1966 by the Daval abbot. This vault was built beside splendid fountains dating from the 18th century.

; The mill of bottom: At the beginning of the 20th century, its owner, Mr. Rouvenach, undertook transformations of which he thought of making profit his son, but only the war of 1914-1918 was going to decide some differently. His/her son having been killed with the combat, it decided to put in management his mill during several years, after which it sold it. ; The mill top: Its last owner was Ernest Rodier. As it did not have a male descent to take again flour-milling, it did not make modernizations with its mill and stopped with its retirement in April 1908. After her death, its widow left the mill to live in the village. The uninhabited mill worsened and crumbled gradually. Opposite, a building which had been built later to be used for the animals was repurchased by Mr. Ribière, who entirely arranged it in a splendid residence.

; Farms and houses of workmen: Gone back to 1714, of 1779 or the 19th century, 26 houses appear in the Base Mérimée of the ministry for the Culture.
