A fish-plate is the name given to a piece of wood, in the shape of corner or small plank, used in certain assemblies:- for the musical instruments: the fish-plate of the Violin, the fish-plate curves Clavecin, the fish-plate of the Guitare;
- for the buckets;
- to maintain parts between them (and by extension the now end to end steel part rails of railroads);
- it is the name of hooping used to hold cheeses during drying; it is also the name of the plate (tray in Osier) where one poses cheese to make them dry; in Basket making, this plate is obtained by the use of the Fendoir.
- it is the old name given to the Attelle S of member;
Railway infrastructure
With a direction similar to those quoted Ci above, a fish-plate is a metal part being useful, by pair and using bolts or of “C” of tightening (metal part pointing out the shape of the letter “C”), to connect between them two consecutive rails, the complete assembly forming a joint then.
Etymology
The word comes from the old man French esclicer which meant “to be split in glares”.
