First violin
In a symphonic orchestra of Music, the first violins are the Violoniste S placed more in front of the formation. They form, with the second violins, a big part of the orchestra, sometimes the majority when there are few winds.
The expression the first violin is synonymous with solo violin . It is theoretically about most qualified and more tried out violonists. It has several functions to assume:
- as a head of section of the first violins, it must direct them;
- as a chief of the violins, it must help in its role the head of section of the second violins;
- its title of violin solo means clearly that it is charged to play the Solo S, sometimes non-existent, sometimes major (ex: in Thai , of Jules Massenet, celebrates it religious Méditation ).
- it directs the agreement of the cords. It receives the the Hautbois, transmits it to the cords, and makes sure that each desk agrees correctly: it is then, only, which the Leader enters.
The other languages support sometimes more still on the importance of the solo violin: in English, it is it, literally the main in concert . One finds the same German idea, with the mot.
The expression the first violin can also be applied in a String quartet. It is about one of the two violins; the rules of traditional composition assign the acutest part to him. The type-setters also generally give him most interesting and/or most delicate.
